Daniel Siegel’s The Whole-Brain Child highlights an idea that’s very relevant to UX research: humans have two “brains.”
Downstairs brain: emotional, reactive, instinctive
Upstairs brain: rational, reflective, problem-solving
When these aren’t integrated, behaviour is driven by emotion rather than reasoning. In UX, that means users often react emotionally first to a product (delight, frustration, confusion) before rational evaluation even begins

What this means for UX research and product design
Observe emotional signals as data
Traditional usability metrics (clicks, time-on-task, completion rates) capture rational behaviour. But emotional reactions are often the first indicator of friction or delight.
Research ideas:Conduct think-aloud sessions and note emotional cues (hesitation, sighs, excitement).
Record micro-expressions during testing or first interactions.
Track abandonment points and ask: “What emotion might have triggered this behaviour?”
Test both instinctive and rational responses
Users’ emotional reactions and task-based performance may diverge. Understanding both provides a complete picture.
Testing approaches:First-impression tests: Measure emotional response in the first 5–10 seconds of interaction.
Task completion tests: Measure accuracy, efficiency, and confidence.
Post-task reflection: Ask users to explain why they acted the way they did.
Reduce “downstairs brain friction”
Emotional overload like confusing flows, unclear feedback, or too many choices can block rational thinking. Designing to minimise stress allows users to engage their “upstairs brain.”
Design focus:Streamlined onboarding flows.
Clear error messaging and guidance.
Predictable interactions and consistent UI patterns.
Integrate emotional and rational insights
Don’t silo qualitative (emotional) and quantitative (rational) findings. Mapping both together reveals opportunities for improvement that either dataset alone might miss.
Research questions to ask:Where do users hesitate or show frustration, and how does it correlate with task success?
Which design elements trigger delight, and how does that impact engagement?
Are emotional reactions aligned with users’ rational understanding of the product?
Bottom line: Users, like children, perform best when emotion and cognition are aligned. UX research that captures both the “upstairs” and “downstairs” brain delivers insights that create products that are not just usable—but intuitive, enjoyable, and human-centered.
