Raising Capable Kids: Teaching Situational Awareness Through Play

When I turned up as a new Girl Scout troop leader, I thought it would be all camping trips and cookie booths. I was a Girl Scout myself, and figured, “how hard can it be?” Practical life skills are kind of the whole point.

What I didn’t expect was just how practical those lessons would get.

As a troop leader, you have a lot of freedom in how you earn badges. Yes, there are plenty of great resources from the Girl Scouts of America and our local Atlanta chapter, but I loved designing “get up and play it out” lessons. Kids don’t want lectures (frankly, neither do adults). But learning through play? That’s timeless.

So when it came time for a Brownie First Aid badge, I knew we had some work to do—not just to check the box, but to empower the girls to actually handle an emergency.
