When I sat down to write Luz and Ian’s story, I knew it was going to break my heart and heal parts of it that I buried a long time ago. Luz’s struggles as a single parent are echoes of my own experience, and the trauma Ian carries about events he couldn’t control and people he lost is relatable to many of us.

September 3, 1862
Our country is being torn apart by this war. Neighbor raises arms against neighbor, and comments that should just be brushed off as contrary are now cause for combat. It’s only been a week since we said our vows, but my husband, John Montgomery, is a man of conviction. He’s not a Quaker, but he doesn’t hold with secession or slavery. He kissed me on the steps this morning before he left to enlist in the 30th Sharp Shooters Battalion. Now I’m here alone, a woman from over the ridge. The people in town give me side-eye and zip their mouths shut when I walk past them. Over the bolts of fabric at the general store this morning, one of the deacon’s wives asked me if it was true my grandmother was one of the last women in the state tried for witchcraft. Then she asked me if I talk to ghosts too.
