Is It Time To Swap From Written Newsletters To Video Content?

The ROTI Appears To Be A Lot Better!

Last week I missed a day from my publishing schedule.

Friday’s are the days when I work on my own projects - I do client work Monday to Thursday - and I got so wrapped up working on videos I forgot to write and publish to Substack and Medium.

I am partly gutted because I am working hard to make publishing three times a week a habit.

And it must be working because I felt uncomfortable knowing that I hadn’t published anything.

The World According To... is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

I spent most of the evening squirming about not getting anything published that day.

Yet at the same time I was partly relaxed about not publishing a newsletter that day because I have been thinking a lot recently about whether I should swap publishing newsletters for creating different content.

Video Appears To Be Out-Performing Written Content!

You see, whenever I publish a video to YouTube, TikTok, or Facebook they are seen by more people organically than those who read my newsletters.

I can’t help but imagine how many people I could reach if I were to create and publish more videos.

The only way I can publish more is if I cut back on publishing written newsletters.

There is only so much content a person can create, and you cannot do more by adding more to your to-do list.

The only way you can do more of something specific is if you reduce the amount you do of something else.

Free Written Content Vs Paid-For Written Content

Also, after talking to a person who is having success writing a specific kind of fiction (something I experimented with a few years ago) I have also been wondering whether I should swap from publishing free newsletters on Medium and Substack to publishing fiction stories people pay to read.

This is a newsletter for another day.

For now, I am going to carry on publishing to Substack and Medium because I really want to build up a large(ish) following on both of those platforms, but I may reduce the amount of newsletters I publish each week from 3 to 2.

It would be foolish of me to completely stop because I, like many others, have done this before and there is nothing worse than starting something, stopping, then starting again a few years later and realising what a great position you would be in if you hadn’t stopped the first time.

Nothing destroys dreams and success quicker than stopping doing something so that you can start something new.

However…

There is a fine line between being persistent and wasting all of your time and effort working on something that is delivering poor results.

For me, video appears to have a greater chance of being seen than written content, and that is due to the fact that most platforms seem to favour video content.

Just today I shared a short video to Facebook on a new page I started for my Cheap Portugal Project and that had 100 plays within a couple of hours.

I don’t believe people watched the whole 48 minutes, but people are looking at this video.

What’s more, it costs me nothing to put that video on Facebook.

The same video is also on YouTube.

(My Channel is Cheap Portugal Property)

It also costs me nothing to publish to YouTube.

I currently have 11 videos on YouTube and they have been viewed 485 times in the last 28 days.

Compare that to my 220 articles on Medium…

They were presented 1,300 times, they were viewed 238 times, but only read 73.

I don’t even know if a read is a full read or a partial read.

Currently, I have made $8.75 over the last 4-5 months of publishing to Medium.

I am not in the YouTube partner program, yet… but when I am I am sure I will make a lot more money with YouTube.

Granted, the content I share on YouTube is different from what I share on Substack and Medium, and that is going to play a big part.

But, I believe that video is quickly becoming my preferred medium because it can easily be published to multiple platforms for free and potentially reach far more people than written content can..

Is creating a video faster than writing a newsletter? Sometimes, but not always. It depends on what the content is about.

I can flip open my phone and create a short video which can be uploaded to several platforms within seconds of recording it.

If I decide to edit the video then it will take longer, but on the whole, a short video can be recorded and uploaded to multiple social media platforms in a few minutes.

Video is the future of marketing because a lot of people are watching videos online.

People now choose to watch videos on TikTok and YouTube over watching television shows.

People watch videos on TikTok and YouTube on widescreen televisions. It is no longer something that just happens on smartphones and laptops.

I am loving video at the moment and in my community here: The Freedom Skills Academy, I do a deep dive into what types of video content is currently doing well on YouTube.

Until next time.

Have a great day.

Andi
