my coffee shop roster: for hanging out

there is a different kind of cafe trip -- the one where you’re not racing a deadline or trying to look productive. you’re meeting your friend for a catch-up that turns into two hours, you’re bringing someone new to the city, you’re doing a slow saturday with nowhere to be. wifi stops mattering. table size starts mattering a lot.

these are the cozy ones, the spots where you order a second drink without thinking about it and nobody makes you feel like you should probably give up your table. you’ll recognize some from the working roster (linked here) -- turns out the best cafes are good for both. this is the list for that kind of afternoon:

saint frank coffee (folsom st) the community table along the glass wall is one of the best spots in the city for a long catch-up. warm without being precious. order: a honey lavender latte and split a pastry

better half coffee (pacific ave) bar bibi’s daytime alter ego -- vintage european-bistro energy and the kind of spot where you walk in and immediately feel like you made a good choice. order: the isfahan latte + breakfast melt, split it

telve cafe (union st) turkish coffee on heated sand, intricate tile tables, and a pace that doesn’t rush you. bring someone you have a lot to catch up with. order: turkish coffee and whatever pastry they have out

compton’s coffee house (columbus) window seats, early opener, and the kind of regular-crowd energy that makes you feel at ease immediately. order: the touch of grey latte (earl grey + espresso)

another cafe (pine st) two floors, consistently open seating, genuinely no pressure energy. laid back energy cafe, no guilt about yapping. order: an iced vanilla latte and just sit

blue danube coffee house (clement) inner richmond institution, cozy & early 2000s vibe, the iconic $1 wifi password situation. the afternoon crowd is entirely people who just want to hang out. order: a fresh juice and an asiago bagel with cream cheese

sightglass coffee (7th st) the upstairs seating is made for this -- industrial loft ceilings, natural light, room to actually spread out. the croissants are a whole separate event. order: a latte + the pistachio berry croissant

haus coffee (24th st) the back patio alone earns this one. there is no better place to sit outside with a cappuccino and lose two hours. also a ton of seating inside, love their fireplace! the cat is a bonus. order: a cappuccino, patio if possible

verve coffee roasters (market st) sunlit, design-forward, big enough that you’re not crammed next to strangers. great for a hang that casually becomes making plans for later. order: vanilla latte with pistachio milk

wooden coffeehouse (cole st) heavily wooded interior, a vhs collection, and a resident wise-cracking parrot. the mocha is made with dandelion chocolate. cole valley is underrated as a hang destination and this place is the reason to go. order: the mocha or an iced dirty chai

double black (cole st, inside yardsale) opening soon! original brick, skylights, a big community table, and pastries from saltwater bakeshop. built by two cole valley neighbors specifically to be a place to hang out -- and you can feel it. order: a latte and their famous cookie. browse the gear while you wait

sōhn (3rd st) two floors, japandi interior, qr code ordering so nobody has to get up awkwardly. note: closed monday and tuesday. order: hojicha cream top

coffeeshop (22nd st) clean scandinavian design and a crowd that is fully there to enjoy themselves. the charcoal salmon croissant has a cult following. I love sitting outside & people watching! order: pistachio croissant and an iced latte

cafe réveille (steiner st) open until 7:30pm, a real food menu, gluten-free friendly, and not a single bad seat in the house. morning turns into afternoon turns into early evening without you noticing, and a great vibe order: the breakfast burrito and a latte

q speciality (california) corner location, floor-to-ceiling windows, and the chai with the espresso cloud is an experience you should share with someone. order: the chai with espresso cloud

snowbird coffee (9th ave, inner sunset) dimly lit, low ceilings, the coziest room in the city if you get a seat. the café bombón (espresso over condensed milk) is the signature and a total conversation starter. order: the café bombón and whatever pastry they have

home coffee roasters (noriega, outer sunset) big windows, natural light, a creative latte menu, and an outer sunset crowd that is fully there to hang out. order: whatever creative latte is on the board

black bird bookstore + cafe (irving st, outer sunset) bookstore-cafe with a loft, a plant-filled garden patio, and little nooks made for this exact kind of afternoon. right across from hook fish if you want to make a whole outer sunset day of it. order: the strawberry matcha latte

diamond coffee n pastry (judah, outer sunset) beautifully decorated, deep in the avenues, and everyone inside looks like they have nowhere to be. order: coconut americano + mango danish
