HOW TO: cure a hangover in sf

how am I twenty-five years old and still getting humbled by a few glasses of wine? make it make sense. anyway, here’s what to do:

raging headache, room somehow the brightest its ever been, and construction in the unit right below you (sigh, ask me how I know). brace yourself

pick your fighter (or both? I get both)

if you’re a coca cola person, and i respect you deeply, nothing will ever replace that first ice cold sip

if you’re a coffee person, sf has you covered. my go-tos: compton’s, philz, or equator depending on where you are and how far you’re willing to walk. all three will make you feel like a person again

sometimes you need food without a wait, a host stand, or being seen in public. these are my go-tos:

  • breakfast little (mission) - breakfast burrito with the gf tortilla. cheesy, the perfect size, also available to order in (they are opening up a second location in cow hollow!)

  • al carajo (mission) - a breakfast burrito that will save your life

  • il canto (fidi) - amazing burrito when you want something cheesy & greasy

  • mamas luncheonette (cow hollow) - I love the mama’s breakfast burrito

  • boichik bagels (pac heights) - one of my top picks for a bagel in sf (they also have gf bagels!)

  • newkirk’s (mission) - some of the best sandwiches in the city; known for their BEC and their hash brown sandwich

  • devil’s teeth baking company (multiple locations) - the special breakfast sandwich, and ask for extra aioli

at some point, you will need to get outside and in the fresh air. you just need somewhere with a lot of grass and enough space to either wander slowly or lie completely flat and stare at the sky. my favorites:

  • dolores park - the classic for a reason. find a patch away from the chaos, bring a blanket, let the sun do its work and veg

  • huntington park - small but quiet, great for people watching and closing your eyes for a second

  • chrissy field beach - warm sand and cool breeze (grab a cold brew from the philz truck on the walk in)

  • the panhandle - shady, great for lying down, and watching dogs go by

  • golden gate park - take your pick of meadow. the whole middle section near the buffalo paddock is quiet and enormous and you can disappear into it. if you want a bit of protection from the shade, go in front of the conservatory of flowers

tonight calls for exactly one thing, pho

the best spots:

  • ly’s vietnamese cuisine (marina)

  • pho 2000 (tenderloin)

  • yummy yummy (sunset)

  • turtle tower (cow hollow & fidi)

  • pho huong viet (richmond)

sometimes there will be a time where you must get going again. here are the spots to ease (or dive) back into it:

  • irish coffees at buena vista (russian hill)

  • a bloody mary from perry’s (cow hollow and fidi) or harry’s (pac heights)

  • a beer at woods (cole valley) paired with a lovely’s smash burger, ofc

anthony bourdain once said the cure is aspirin, a cold coke, a joint, and spicy food. this guide covers three out of four. for the fourth, flore in the castro has you covered

Thank you all for reading and happy sunday! Let me know what I missed, xoxo

Love Always,

Su
