As the Spring Semester comes to a close, we celebrate another successful year of Anabel’s Grocery! We could not continue without the support of YOU our lovely alumnus, so here are some end-of-year updates. Thank you again for all of the continual support, as it helps us thrive as a community.
On April 15th, all of our lovely staff got a chance to interact with former Anabel’s workers and alumni! Thank you so much to our fantastic and accomplished alumni who highly regard their time at Anabel’s and appreciate how far we have come. We aim to continue holding alumni panels and hear about how Anabel’s has shaped your experience at Cornell and the workforce. Thanks again to our speakers and we will update you all on future opportunities to share!
Via’s Cookies: LGBTQ+, black-owned cookie business that gives back to the community and ensures food accessibility for all. Via’s Cookies provides delicious cookies with gluten-free varieties and donates 5% of their profits to struggling students to promote academic equity.
Cramp bites from Aunt Flo's Kitchen! This business is run by Armita Jamshidi, a Cornell '25 undergraduate student! They produce gluten-free and vegan snacks made entirely with whole ingredients (dates, walnuts, pistachios, sesame seeds, etc.) designed to help alleviate menstrual cramps.
Fresh flowers from Wildflower Floral! We have excitingly started selling fresh flowers in store. A great addition to your weekly shopping, what better way to celebrate spring than to come by and grab some fresh flowers.
Reusable Tote Bags! Anabel’s is now offering reusable bags. Now customers and student staff can show their support throughout campus for the organization.
Our work at Anabel’s goes far beyond the store. During our time in class, we have gotten the amazing opportunity to chat with local vendors who work with Anabel’s! In talking with local business owners about their missions, students got the chance to discuss their roles in our larger food systems. Some highlights were talking to Stick&Stone Farms, Wide Awake Bakery, Via’s Cookies, Oechnser Farms, Finger Lake Farms, Tompkins Food Future, and Fort Baptist Farms! Students heard firsthand about the experiences of changing our food system on a local scale.
In discussing food justice with an Ithaca produce distributor – Brent Maynard from Finger Lake Farms – students learned the crucial role local distributors play in reforming the food system. Maynard’s work ensures that local farmers’ products get sold so that they can maintain viable incomes amidst the presence of large, big-brand producers. In supporting local farmers, Finger Lake Farms has been able to push the food system away from over-industrialization, where food is oversaturated with less nutrition. We learned so much from Brent and all of the other insightful speakers.
As for our work, we are crafting our Social Impact Report to measure the immense growth Anabel’s has seen this semester!
The CollabEdu committee has put on some great projects this semester to not just further Anabel’s mission to the students who shop here but to bring the mission onto the further community.
On March 24th, CollabEdu hosted the Toast-a-Thon. This event featured poetry, art, education, and toast provided by Wide Awake Bread (with gluten-free options). Participants learned about the Alternatives Library’s Prisoner Express program, where they wrote letters and made art to send to prisoners. Anabel’s impact spreads far beyond our grocery store.
We held a Goshen Kimchi pop-up on February 22! We had a great turn out with students and other Cornell members being able to try a variety of Kimchi. Now students can come buy their own kimchi with the knowledge of what they like and how to incorporate it into their meals.
The week of April 15th, Anabel’s did a fundraiser alongside Lev’s Kitchen. During this week, each profit off of the Honey Harissa Chicken sandwich at Lev’s was donated to Anabel’s. Each ingredient in this dish was made from something found in Anabel’s, inspiring students to take on cooking endeavors of their own!

If able, we are endlessly grateful for our alumni and the impact they have had on the organization, we would love for any and all alumni to stop by the fast changing Anabel’s Grocery. These pictures are only a smart part of all the amazing additions we would like to highlight.
