Now that we are at the end of the Fall 2025 semester we wanted to reflect on another successful season at Anabel’s Grocery! The semester was very eventful, both in terms of Anabel’s and in the country. In addition to supporting local vendors and hosting community events, we wanted to help our customers as well, showing solidarity during the government shutdown.

Our efforts to provide affordable and nutritious food to Cornellians would not be possible without YOU—our incredible customers, alumni, and supporters.

As a nonprofit initiative, we rely on donations and fundraising to keep our prices low and ensure that our local partners are fairly compensated. Now, more than ever, we need your help to continue our work and expand our impact.

Showing Solidarity

Following the government shutdown, in solidarity with students who were affected by the SNAP/EBT withholdings, we lowered the prices of several staple goods: eggs, apples, bananas, potatoes, milks (including dairy alternatives), peanut butter, pasta, pasta sauce, and bread.

We also discretely offered shoppers a choice at the register: 50% discount or a $1 donation to support our discounted prices. Customers were also given the option to do both.

Our approach allowed customers to self-select based on their circumstances and provided the opportunity for members of the Anabel’s community to support each other, reflecting collective economics in action!

Since the beginning of the campaign, we were able to give $812.69 in discounts, but even more amazing was the $3,356 in donations we received as well!

More than a grocery store

In addition to supplying nutritious food, our Collaboration and Education Committee has hosted several community dinners with the Dilmun Hill Student Farm, the Cornell Hydroponics Club, and World Central Kitchen! They have been a great way for the larger Cornell community to come together and share a meal!

In addition to the community dinners, several collaborations have been held with the Botanic Gardens, Matcha Club, and Food Recovery Network to expand our audience. Pop-ups have also been hosted by the Marketing Committee to get folks excited about new products!

New Products, Local Vendors!

Recently, we added products from Stony Brook WholeHeartedFoods, a company based in the Finger Lakes/Geneva, NY! They sell a variety of products, ranging from freshly roasted seed snacks to protein powders. At Anabel’s we are always looking to expand our selection with local, unique products in support of our mission.
