I asked my kids one simple question… and it led to one of the funniest conversations we’ve had all week.

I asked my kids one simple question… and it led to one of the funniest conversations we’ve had all week.

Lately, I’ve been trying something different.

Instead of asking “how was your day?” (and getting the usual “good”), I started asking more fun, unexpected questions, and it has completely changed our conversations.

So I’m trying something new here too.

Each week, I’ll send one simple question you can ask your kids, along with a quick activity and a book to go with it, or another really cool find I’ve found. Something easy, meaningful, and actually fun to use.

Question of the Week:

If you could combine two animals to make one brand new animal, which two would you pick and why?

Hannah (8): “A bunny, a dog, and a turtle because they are all cute and I really like them.”

Mary (4): “A dinosaur and a skunk… because then it will toot.” (There were a lot of giggles after that one.)

Try This Fun Activity:

Have your child draw their new animal, give it a name, and decide where it lives and what it eats.

Here’s Hannah’s creation - she did her’s with a scratch card*.

Mary decided to use paint* and construction paper*.

This Week’s Book Pairing:

Dogfish and the Gift of Inclusion is a sweet, heartwarming story about friendship and making sure everyone feels included. When one friend goes missing before a big celebration, the group works together to find him because the party doesn’t start until everyone is there.

You can also watch the read-aloud and a fun author Q&A where kids ask their own questions. It’s perfect for sparking even more conversation.

We also have free lesson plans, coloring pages, and activity ideas to go along with the book on the Kids Ask Authors Answer website if you want to extend the fun.

The author recently released a new book focused on experiencing the loss of a pet. If your family is going through that, I am so sorry. Losing a pet is incredibly hard, and this story offers a gentle way to help kids process those feelings and remember the love they shared.

Giveaway Update:

Thank you so much to everyone who entered the recent giveaway.

We actually ended up with 3 winners this time because we had a winner from the UK too!

Two of the winners sent photos of their goodies, and it made my day seeing everything arrive safely and knowing the books and goodies found happy new homes.

Thank you again to everyone who entered, shared, and supported the giveaway. New giveaway will be coming soon : )

Joke of the Week:

Why did the elephant bring a suitcase to the beach?
Because he wanted to pack his trunk.

Send Me Your Kid’s Creations

I would love to hear your kids’ answers too, so feel free to reply and send me their responses or drawings. I may even feature some in a future email.

And if you know another parent, teacher, or grandparent who might enjoy these weekly questions, feel free to forward this email to them.

Wishing you a week filled with good books, sweet treats, and lots of laughter.
