Happy (Almost) Fourth, Midlifers!

It’s early here and hot but we decided last night that we are going to give the beach a go today. That new Cool Cabana needs to hit the sand. We are going to go super early to even get an hour or two in before we have to run home and spend the rest of the day in the air conditioning.

What are your weekend plans? Is the insane heat wave that’s affecting so many of us in the US putting a damper on your holiday plans?

Honestly, I’m just grateful to wake up this morning and check my Find My Friends app on my phone and see that my condo is the location for three of my kids. My dog, whose fealty to sleeping on the floor of my bedroom is generally unwavering, is passed out on his Costco dog bed in the TV room, close to my daughter who made up a (quite luxurious-looking) bed last night on the big IKEA sectional. He looked at me as I came down the stairs to get coffee and then closed his eyes, happy to be part of a bigger pack—if just for the weekend.

The July Fourth weekend has always been hard for me. It was when my parents announced they were getting a divorce, that summer I turned 12, which afterwards always cast a shadow over that time of the year. It also became the demarcation line between life before and after the divorce. The exact moment when the rug got pulled out from under my small, predictable life and no matter what I did, I could not regain my footing. It would take years before I could build a new foundation to set root to.
