Okay, here’s a little teaser for you. I am thrilled to be interviewing Alishia McCullough, author of “Reclaiming the Black Body,” next on my Substack!
In her book, Alishia outlines how centuries of racism and misogyny in this country, the generational trauma that has ensued, and systemic and cultural oppression have impacted Black women and their relationship to their bodies. She also offers beautiful somatic and mindfulness practices throughout the book to help guide healing for any and all of us who struggle with eating disorders and disordered eating. Alishia’s personal life—from her childhood through her experiences as a therapist—are interwoven as well.
There are so many necessary reasons for this book to exist, but of note are the ways in which our systems are rooted in bias and racism, which impact Black women’s ability to be diagnosed with eating disorders and to access treatment. There is a belief that Black women don’t struggle with eating disorders. And we know that eating disorders can be deadly. In other words, we are putting Black women’s lives at risk.
I don’t want to share too much more until I publish the interview but we cannot look at eating disorders in this country without amplifying the disparate ways different groups of people are impacted. At the same time, Alishia’s book offers a beautifully powerful, loving, and supremely helpful way for individual women of all races and ages to engage in somatic and mindfulness practices to help us heal our relationship to our bodies.
Stay tuned for more but if you want to buy her book now, I promise you won’t be disappointed!
