Welcome to the weekend!

Figuring out where to eat and drink when visiting New York City can be daunting. Options are endless and there is never enough time to hit up everywhere you want to go. On our last few trips to the city, we have tried to make our visits more manageable by focusing our time in specific neighborhoods and visiting the places that make that particular corner of the city unique.

Today, we’re sharing the first of our neighborhood spotlights on the city with some of our favorite places to go in Midtown Manhattan. Spanning from 34th Street to 59th Street, Midtown is where you’ll find Times Square, Rockefeller Center, the Theater District, and hundreds of hotels. For many folks, this is where they stay on their first trip to NYC — the area is in the center of everything whether you are visiting as a tourist or in town on business. (I recently stayed in Midtown when I went to a conference at the Javits Center.)

While Midtown is indisputably the most touristy part of the city, there are some really fantastic places to eat. As always, our Overnight Stay newsletters feature a perfect eating and drinking day in a destination, and are reserved for paid subscribers. Our picks today include a top-tier bagel shop, a refined lunch at a celebrated restaurant, stops for cocktails and oysters, plus a beloved steakhouse for dinner and more.

This month, we also shared our freshly updated Signature Field Guide to California Wine Country. This 54-page guide features more than three dozen recommendations that we’ve organized into a five-day itinerary, featuring vetted picks for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks. It’s included with a paid subscription or available on our website for $25.

Before we head out for the weekend, our Weekend Reading list features Jed Portman on must-try Midwest sandwich shops, a spotlight on three freshly renovated Southern waterfront hotels, and a look at Denver chef Johnny Curiel’s latest restaurant by Laura | New Denizen.

MANHATTAN, N.Y. — A trip to New York is always a delight, and while we often zip all over the island or head into Brooklyn or the other boroughs, sometimes it’s nice to just stick close to one part of the city. Midtown is a section of Manhattan that’s easy to get to from every part of the city, and some of our very favorite restaurants are here. Our full-day itinerary includes our top picks for breakfast, coffee, lunch, and dinner, plus two spots for drinks.

Why you should go: There are tons of great bagels in this city and we always try new places on every visit. The best we’ve had in Midtown are found at Liberty. The bagel has just the right amount of chew and comes with the perfect schmear of light, whipped cream cheese. There are many spreads on offer, including cinnamon walnut raisin, lox lemon dill scallion, and honey bacon sriracha. Our bagel tastes tend to skew classic, and the everything bagel with scallion cream cheese makes a fine choice.

What to get: Everything bagel with scallion cream cheese
