The Long Game

Beginnings are hard.

Starting something like this, even when the idea has been sitting with you for a while, is not always straightforward. This is something I’ve been thinking about for some time, and now felt like the right moment to actually put it into practice.

I work in sports public relations, early in my career, and a lot of what I’m learning does not come from one place. It comes from being in different environments, paying attention to how people approach their work, and trying to understand how the industry operates beyond what is visible on the surface.

Most of that process is not documented.

That is the reason for Built in Public.

This is a space to track my growth as it happens. What I am learning, what I am noticing across the industry, and how my perspective is evolving over time. It is not meant to be a guide or a finished point of view, but a record of the process.

The kind of space I want this to be is simple. Thoughtful, clear, and grounded in what is actually happening. A place where ideas can be shared and where people can add to the conversation if they have a different perspective or similar experience.

In terms of what to expect:

  • Regular issues breaking down moments in sports and how they are communicated

  • Reflections on career development and access within the industry

  • Observations on how strategy, messaging, and media shape what people see

I will be writing consistently and building this over time.

If you are working in sports, trying to get into the industry, or interested in how communication shapes what people see and understand, this is a place to follow that process as it unfolds.

If that sounds like something you want to keep up with, feel free to subscribe or share.

Built in Public is a newsletter where Amani Marie documents her growth as a young sports public relations professional in real time. It focuses on what she is learning, what she is observing across the industry, and the people and work that stand out.

Some issues will examine moments in sports and how they are communicated. Others will reflect on career development, access, and what it takes to build in this space over time.

This is intended to be a space for learning, sharing perspective, and tracking progress along the way.
