Is your tarot deck possessed?

When working with our tarot deck, with whom exactly are we talking?

Many of my clients and followers who come from, say, evangelical backgrounds have been told tarot is like an Ouija board, a porthole for low level grifter demons to come through and cause trouble. So they may initially feel nervous about working with the cards.

Dudes, I would like to enter as Exhibit A that trouble is abundant in this world, and very few of humanity’s most pressing problems have come from tarot decks. Or Ouija boards for that matter!

When I think of rectangular things the size of a human palm that cause an endless assortment of problems, tarot cards are not the first objects that come to mind.

Of course, I’m thinking of smart phones.

Both give us information. Both open portholes to other worlds and other minds. Both transmit images. Both are constructed from the cutting-edge technology of their time. Paper, in the 15th century case of tarot. And slave-mined copper and silica in the case of smart phones.

When you engage with your smart phone, whom are you engaging with? Who is speaking to you??

If you’re watching a cat video, you are engaging with cats, yes, but you are also engaging with the engineers who designed the social media platform, the advertisers, the military masterminds who first developed the technology, the workers who built the wireless infrastructure, the ancient sea creatures whose bodies formed the plastic you now hold in your hand.

Friends, the same is true for everything. When you connect with a tree, when you connect with your partner, you’re always engaging with histories and connections that sprawl across the pluriverse.

When you engage with tarot, you’re engaging with paper and paint, but also images that have been with humanity for centuries. You’re speaking with your own imagination, and the collective unconscious.

• become skillful in esoteric symbolism (like astrology and alchemy)

• learn to trust your intuition and inner wisdom

• develop a reliable way for moving outside the reality assigned to us by the dominant culture

If tarot is only mildly useful to you, it may be because you haven’t yet built the scaffolding to move between the worlds in a way that can reliably help you retrieve useful information...yet.
