In our ginormous green room (it was a gymnasium), I heard sounds I haven’t heard in over a decade.

Being an established director/choreographer for over a decade, I get asked lots of questions. And I mean LOTS. Here they are, with answers based on my experience in many different places of work

Nothing has been as hard as this experience. The mirror I’m holding up to myself is crystal f***ing clear. I’m discovering some troublesome things about myself, my past, and what I did to survive. I’m learning a new reality. I’m creating a new reality. It’s not easy, but it’s possible. You can too.

This makes my blood boil. I’ve seen many things. I’ve heard many things. This misconception about dance, theatre, and the performing arts has been the #1 thing to set fire in my body.

One time, I got stabbed in the butt by a Star Wars character. Not Darth Vader. Not Obi-Wan. Not Yoda, but someone you may try to wipe from your mind because he’s so annoying. Here’s a childhood core memory, and it’s not a good one.

I wouldn’t shut up about it. A few weeks later, I was on a bus with my Grandma to see it. I do remember feeling oh-so-fancy, which then caused me to feel out of place. But when Sutton Foster stepped out onto the stage, something clicked in me.

I’m sick of seeing actors get worked up. I’m sick of the misinformation. The assumptions. Auditions are supposed to be fun, damn it! So, I’m writing this tell-all blog post. Here’s what really happens behind the audition table.

I was stunned. I couldn’t believe the words that came out of the interviewer’s mouth. I’ve NEVER in my years of interview experience been asked that question before. For crying out loud, that’s a dating app prompt.

As a dance teacher myself, I’ve spent over a decade watching little new ballerinas come in with books to class. I’ve read them myself, and if a little girl who’s family can’t afford dance lessons truly wants to be a ballerina, these books are where her dance education should begin.

Stop. Stop searching. I get it. You want to find a dance studio in your area that’s the perfect balance of education and safety. But the more you search, the more time it’ll take for your child to step foot into a dance class. Do this instead.
