Hopi Prophecies and Present Times

As a young person I was fortunate to meet the Hopi Elders Thomas Banyacya and David Monongye here in the Southwestern US. As carriers of the Hopi prophecies, their words made a deep impression on me. How much the Hopi prophecies and present times connect is highly relevant today.

I first met Grandfather David in 1979 at a sustainability conference at Lama Foundation north of Taos, when his transmission of the Hopi prophecy about solar energy threw our well-meaning gathering into disarray. You can read more about that here.

Grandfather Thomas Banyacya gave a speech about his life at the Unitarian Church in Santa Fe in the early 1990s. As he spoke about how he had spent 7 years in prison as a conscientious objector to WW II, a deep urge arose in me to get his life story more broadly out in the world. He invited me to come to his home in Hopi. He and his partner Fermina were fierce fighters on behalf of the Earth.

Both Grandfathers Thomas and David received the Hopi prophecy transmission in the 1940s as young men. One of the prophecies was that a Great House of Mica on the Eastern Shore would be built, where leaders of the world could come together to solve the world’s problems without war: the United Nations. After many attempts, late in his life, Thomas Banyacya was able to speak there.

One prophecy stated that a “gourd full of ashes” would be invented, which if dropped from the sky, would boil the oceans and burn the land, causing nothing to grow for many years. This would be a signal for transmission holders to reveal some of the prophecies in order to warn the world of drastic changes that could bring an end to all life unless people corrected themselves and their leaders in time. So Grandfather David and Thomas first spoke out as young people after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in 1948.

They worked together closely throughout their lives in support of spiritual and ecological balance. As elders, they connected with native leaders of other tribes and pueblos. At the point in their lives in which I met them, they were open to getting the word out to anyone receptive to what they had to say, including young white people like myself.

The Life Path - or the Life Out of Balance Path

The pictograph depicted here in this Substack is about a specific Hopi prophecy that addresses the choices we have in life, our direction as individuals, communities, and cultures.

The largest figure on the bottom left is the Great Spirit. The hand holding the weapon represents the instructions to the Hopi to lay down their weapons.

The vertical line is a time scale in thousands of years. The “Life Path” established by the Great Spirit running off of it horizontally is the lower, narrow path of continuous Life in harmony with nature, represented by a person planting corn.

The upper road with four linked figures represents white man’s technological achievements. It is a Life Out of Balance path, koyaanisqati, which becomes erratic and ends in thin air.

Circles are associated with the continuous Path of Life. The cross is that of Christianity.

There is a short vertical line between the two paths. This is seen as the last chance for people to turn back to the Path of Life before the upper road disintegrates completely, technology gone amuck.

The idea is we have a choice. As Grandfather Thomas said at the UN in 1992, We must change, turn around. . . Do not look outside yourself for a leader. Are you in right relation? . . . All that we do now must be done in a sacred manner.

Indigenous Wisdom and Polarity Therapy

There are shared values between this ancient Hopi lineage and the relatively young 100-year-old field of Polarity Therapy: respect for nature and sentient beings, awareness of unseen energies, an acknowledgement of the interconnectedness of all life.

Prior to the March 2026 American Polarity Therapy Association conference, APTA reached out to teachers in the field who wouldn’t be able to attend, inviting us to send a video for presentation at the gathering. Here’s the corrected link on what I sent about Indigenous Wisdom and Polarity Therapy.

The rapidly cascading unworkability of the “World Out of Balance”

There are plenty of experiences of this in our current lives. Looking at just one, it is tax season here in the US; federal taxes are due every April 15. For old people filing taxes, working with the Social Security Agency has become close to impossible. In the past, key summary documents (1099s) would be delivered by mail. This is no longer a given. If this doesn’t happen, one has to go online or visit a local Social Security field office to try to get the required documentation.

Yet online, a new step has been added this year. Before you can do anything tangible with the Social Security agency, you have to prove who you are. A previously established account is not enough. You must agree to let the federal site take photographs or do a live Zoom.

In my own experience, after arduous effort, I was informed by the site of the long list of specific info it had managed to gather on me. It then concluded, Unable to verify your identity. Talk about being left hanging in mid air!

1030% of New Mexicans have no access to internet. This is especially true of tribal communities, of which there are many here. 24% of us nationwide lacked internet access as of 2022.

I think of the thousands, perhaps millions. of us in the US facing this freshly dysfunctional system in the coming days. As our tax dollars are used to kill kids instead of feed them, the insanity of what the Hopis call koyaanisqati, life out of balance, stands in stark relief.

The I Ching on this present moment

A group of us friends participated in the No Kings 3 protest last Saturday in Santa Fe. We stood on the edge of the crowd of thousands, facing the nearest thoroughfare. The back side of our banner read:

When the people are strong in their inner direction and firm in their attitudes, evil in government and in society can find no place in which to grow.

– The I Ching, hexagram #18, Work on What Has Been Spoiled, Carol Anthony’s A Guide to the I Ching, p. 87.

This is our aim.

May 1: Nationwide General Strike

An economic national boycott is planned for May 1 to build on the momentum of last week. May Day Strong calls for No Shopping, No Work, No School. Read more here.

Easter and Passover

In this time of spiritual renewal, may we move beyond differences to act in a sacred manner, as Grandfather Thomas said, and stand up for ecological balance for all beings.
