Tuesday: Yes, we need to start talking about holiday gift guides

Aly Walansky · Aly Walansky's Newsletter

I know.

It’s August.

It’s hot, you may or may not have a final vacation of summer on the books. You may still be trying to figure out what happened to June.

But there I am, your favorite lovable but annoying blonde, here walking into your inbox carrying a Christmas tree.

🎄

Sorry, guys, but it’s time. We need to start thinking and talking about holiday gift guides.

Actually, we’re going to be talking about holiday gift guides a lot over the next few months, and I have like a 20-part series planned right here, so pull up a chair and get comfortable and get ready for Aly’s Holiday Gift Guide Countdown as a recurring series. By December, we will have built an entire graduate-level course at this rate.

It’s not going to be every day, I promise. I’m not turning this newsletter into the gift guide version of Hallmark holiday romance season. Which, actually, sort of starts in July. So, they still win.

But at least once a week or so, we’re going to tackle another piece of the holiday gift guide pitching puzzle, and there’ll be some fun special surprises along the way. We’ll talk about what makes something actually gift-guide-worthy. We’ll talk about subject lines. We’ll talk about pitching an angle instead of just a product. We’ll talk about price points and retailer links and availability. We’ll talk about photos. OH, WILL WE TALK ABOUT PHOTOS. We’ll talk about samples and mailers and timelines. We’ll talk about follow-ups. We’ll talk about what happens after the guide publishes and whether you should email the writer asking them to swap the image, change the copy, use a different retailer or add your product to a guide you weren’t originally included in.

But before we can talk about any of that, we have to start with perhaps the most important holiday gift guide lesson of all:

To a normal human being, August is not Christmas.

To a journalist, August can absolutely be Christmas.

Some long-lead publications have been thinking about holiday coverage for quite some time already. Other writers are just beginning to build their lists. Some digital outlets won’t get serious about holiday gift guides until next month or so.

but freelancers — hi! 👋 — may be working across outlets with completely different timelines simultaneously, which means there is no magical date when someone rings a bell and announces:

HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE PITCHING HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN.

The window is more like a very long sliding door.

And parts of it are already open.

This is where I think a lot of holiday pitching goes sideways.

The consumer or the reader may not start thinking:

What am I getting Mom for Christmas?

until November.

But the story telling that consumer what to get Mom might have been assigned in August or pitched in September or filed in October.

PR works on the editorial calendar, not the consumer calendar.

That distinction matters enormously.

Because waiting until something feels seasonally appropriate to pitch it may mean waiting until the opportunity is already gone.

This is also not me telling you to spend tomorrow morning blasting every journalist you’ve ever met with:

🎄🎁 HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE IDEA!!!!! 🎁🎄

Please don’t make me regret writing this newsletter.

Starting early means starting strategically. Look at the outlets you’re pitching. Look at what they published last year. Think about whether they’re print, digital or both. Think about whether you’re pitching staff writers, commerce editors or freelancers.

Pay attention when journalists post calls for holiday pitches.

And, whenever possible, understand what that particular person actually covers before deciding your artisanal dog-shaped butter dish is exactly what their readers need for Christmas.

(Although, to be clear, I would like to see the dog-shaped butter dish.)

One of the most useful questions you can ask a journalist right now is incredibly simple:

Are you working on holiday gift guides yet?

Or:

Do you know when you’ll begin accepting holiday gift guide pitches?

That is useful information!

You don’t have to manufacture urgency where none exists. You don’t have to guess. And you definitely don’t have to send the same pitch every two weeks from August through December hoping eventually you hit the correct moment.

Find out what someone’s timeline looks like.

Then work with it.

Because we’re going to spend the next few months getting much more granular.

What belongs in the pitch?

What makes a product stand out when a writer is receiving hundreds of submissions?

What information should be available immediately?

When should you offer a sample?

How do you pitch the same product differently for different guides?

When is it appropriate to follow up?

What do you do when inventory changes?

And what happens when the guide goes live?

We’re going to get into all of it.

My hope is that by the time we’re deep into actual holiday season, nobody reading this newsletter is panic-emailing a journalist on December 19 (my birthday, btw, for those who care!) with:

LAST-MINUTE STOCKING STUFFER — PERFECT FOR YOUR HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE!!!

while the journalist is already drinking eggnog and writing Valentine’s Day content.

Start looking.

Look at the outlets you want to be in. Look at last year’s gift guides. Look at the categories they covered. Look at who wrote them. Look at when they published. Look at what kinds of products made the cut.

And start thinking about where your product genuinely belongs — not simply where you’d like to see it. You don’t necessarily need to pitch everyone tomorrow.

But you absolutely should know who you’re going to pitch, what you’re going to pitch them, and why.

Because yes, I know.

It’s August.

But somewhere, right now, a journalist has already opened a holiday gift guide spreadsheet. I know I have.

And you probably want to be on it.

Since people are often asking about the status of stories from a while ago, and I only share stories in this newsletter that were published or updated in the current week, I have created a list of my author pages at various publications to which I contribute. Bookmark it and make your life a bit easier.

If you or your client are featured in any of these stories, I super appreciate any social media shares! Please remember to tag @alywalansky and the outlet.

Be sure to read the below list carefully. Many are stories I posted about yesterday, but some of yesterday's stories are no longer listed and a few new ones have been added since yesterday. This (below) is everything that is still a currently open opportunity as of today.

Please remember when pitching me: Email me at alywalansky@gmail.com - do NOT just hit reply on this newsletter, or there’s a good shot your email will be lost in the heap. Give your email a subject line that makes it clear which story you are pitching me for — it’ll help you in the long run.

Please consult my industry insights guides on submitting expert commentary, sending emails that will catch a journalist’s attention, how to craft pitches journalists will say ‘yes’ to, and the right and wrong way to submit photos, if you need any extra guidance before sending your pitches.

Yes, indeed the time has come. I’m starting to source for holiday gift guides! For an idea of the type of formatting and content I write for my various guides, visit my Yahoo author page here - and please hit follow while you’re there to receive all my new content!

I’ll give more information in the coming weeks, but you can absolutely start polishing off those pitches any time you’re ready :) My content is generally not going to encompass parenting, sports, kids, automotive, but will include travel, home, gadgets, office, tech, wellness, beauty/fashion/accessories, culinary, and other topics.

Tip: If you want any guidance on how to pitch for gift guides more successfully, be sure to check out the complete webinar recording linked here — it’s free!

Before pitching: Please be sure to refer to my photo submission guidelines for help with photo submission best practices!

The first section is a return to the casino floor with categories that include Best Casino Entertainment Venue, Best Casino Outside of Las Vegas, Best Casino Resort Las Vegas, Best Hotel Casino, Best Casino Dining, Best Sports Betting App (and yes, I know I did nominations these same contests last year and the year before that, but these are for this year — feel free to email again if you have before whether or not you ended up on the nominee or winners list!).

Next category, while (yes) we’re still enjoying summer, we’re imagining a Snow Day with categories that include Best Snow Tubing Park, Best Ski Resort, Best Ski Resort for Families,Best Après-Ski Destination, and Best Ski School. And just a reminder there’s a bunch of categories currently live and open for voting, so be sure to click the link above and check out if you or your client are among the nominees!

If you think I should consider you or your client when I submit my list of nominations, drop me an email at alywalansky@gmail.com.

Looking for southern chefs and southern food safety experts to comment on stories related to:

  • Is It Safe To Eat Eggs With Double Yolks?

  • Is It Safe To Eat Eggs With Cloudy Whites?

  • Favorite Southern Soda of Southern Chefs

  • Do you need to string celery? (remove strings before cooking or eating it)

If you have anyone who wants to weigh in, please drop me an email asap and be sure to email me before submitting commentary so I can share specific questions and guidance.

I’m a contributor to Dining Out NYC (see a recent story I did for them on the Las Vegas influence on NYC’s culinary scene), and always open to pitches related to NYC dining trends, and openings, news, and so forth.

I’m sourcing for product pitches and expert commentary related to smart solutions or product that creates storage out of thin air. Think: a closet, counter space, an extra tier or shelf inside of a cabinet, as well as surprising items to organize around the house, affordable (or splurgy!) finds that solve a very specific problem. Think: IKEA, Costco, Sam's Club, Amazon, HomeGoods, Dollar General, Dollar Tree.

It’s almost National Potato Day, and I’m looking for creative, interesting, delicious dishes and cocktails (cocktails? maybe!) - centered on the potato. Looking forward, I’m also sourcing for National Bacon Day, National Cheeseburger Day, and National Queso Day!

To pitch, please include:

  • Name of drink/dish

  • Restaurant/bar where it can be ordered (as well as city, state, URL)

  • description

  • quote from chef/bartender about dish (and name and title of person being quoted)

  • and LINK to image, with an identifying file name, and any appropriate photo credits included

(I know I give these guidelines over and over, but every day I get dozens of pitches that disregard them, so it bears repeating! <3)!

Email me at alywalansky@gmail.com asap please! All the same parameters will apply when emailing.

Thanks!
