Have you ever thought you have all your numbers together and potential profits are looking really good just for another surprise cost to sneak into the picture?
That's exactly what happened to me recently when UPS emailed me that my 300$ worth of books was going to cost me another $133 just to get it into the country. And I thought I had been smart ordering from a fellow commonwealth country. Nope UPS decided that the most efficient way to get books to Canada from the UK was to divert them down to PA and then back up to Montreal.
It's no surprise that a lot of Canadians are avoiding USA because of all the tariffs and other things that go without saying. I am one of those Canadians with an *. I love my fellow American writers and still support them as much as possible, so I have been avoiding supporting big brand USA items.
I really thought I was on to something when I selected UK for printing on my IngramSpark author copies.
Now, I did test this a couple times. My proofs came from their UK printing locations as well and they were sent royal mail and came directly to Canada. Unfortunately they were very small orders so when I put in my big order they sent it UPS which caused my problems.
For these copies, I will not be able to bring them to stores to sell. I would lose money on them.
These will solely be for in person events where I can sell them full price and attempt to break even.
Requiem of the Unclaimed worked out to be $17.16 cost per book. Retail is $18.99
Caught in the In-Between worked out to be $9.65 cost per book. Retail is $6.99
I will be able to make a few cents on my main book and lose money on my short story. Although I am already pondering creative ways to increase pricing to ensure I can at least break even.
Since I have another book coming out in October I might be coupling a free advanced ebook with purchase of the short story, so I am able to increase my pricing. There is lots to noodle on that one though, maybe even a gift packaging with bookmark & stickers as well. I have lots of time before my first event to get a plan ironed out!
I have also contacted Ingram because the fees are insane so if there is a form I can submit for refund or anything then I will follow that lead as well. Unfortunately, Ingramspark has a 5 day response timing for support so I won’t have answers right away. But I will be sure to share anything I find out here! These fees are much more than VAT, I am getting slammed with import fees and tariffs, so I will fight it as much as I can. Thanks UPS….
