There are so many options when it comes to printing books in Canada.
Like, I could drown in the options.
And while to have that many options is fantastic, unfortunately, I was constricted down to two options when I looked at the prices.
KDP or BookVault
Realistically, I was down to one true option because I do not want to use KDP.
KDP is a great option for indie authors, don’t get me wrong, and I do use them to distribute to Amazon, because that's the best for $$$, we make so little as indie authors that we can not risk leaving any pennies on the table. I do not want to use them to order author copies because my small books have text on the spine, which is not an issue for printers with less margin for error. But KDP won’t even allow me to add text to the spine because they know it wont always land perfectly.
Kudos to them though for being honest about their limitations.
I just need my spine text. I find it adds an extra professional polish to my small books.
On to BookVault.
Bookvault has print prices that are very close to Ingramspark, except they do have a title upload fee or monthly subscription fee for their unlimited service.
I have gone with a free account and the way I have gotten around the upload fees is with coupon codes.
SAMPLE is a code that BookVault advertises deep within their FAQ pages. This allows you to get your first title on there for free to make sure they are the right fit for you before you move your books over. (This only gets you free title upload but you will still have to pay ship and print costs to get a physical proof/copies).
BVISLAND is another working code I found that gets you the first 3 title uploads for free as well.
These codes let me get my books up for free.
Since I will be using them to build my inventory to sell I have not ordered yet so I can not attest to the quality, but from my research I have heard good things.
I am likely going to use these titles to connect with an online shop so I can directly sell on my website. This won’t be right away because honestly, I already have way too much to focus on before that, but I am very excited about the possibilities.
An important thing to note when looking at BookVault pricing, even if you select Canada as your printing location, all prices are in USD when not denoted as pounds.
If you are using a different Canadian printer i’d love to hear more ! Always looking for more options and hearing other people’s experiences 🖤
