Melanie Wendy · A Look Behind The Seams

When someone joins one of my mentorship groups, their biggest hesitation about sharing on live calls is never what you’d expect. It’s not fear of judgment - because five minutes in, and anyone can see just how friendly and supportive this community really is.

What holds people back is the fear that someone will steal their idea.

And everytime someone brinds this up, I tell them the same thing: it’s not going to happen.

How can I be so sure?

It comes down to two ways of thinking that most people never learn to distinguish between - convergent and divergent thinking. And without mastering both, you could hand someone the best idea in the world and watch them do absolutely nothing with it.

But here’s why I’m really telling you this. Not to help you steal ideas - but to help you understand why you’re not making the progress you know you’re capable of.

Divergent thinking is the easy part.

It’s basically the initial brainstorm where you have all these ideas and possibilities, and all you have to do is think about this big, expansive, infinite future where anything could be.

Why can’t you be the next Lululemon? Why couldn’t you become the next-biggest running brand? Anything is possible.

That’s why people think it’s so easy to take other people’s ideas. Because divergent thinking is easy. It’s easy to imagine something and say it’s going to happen.

But the reason most people aren’t able to actually execute is that they haven’t mastered convergent thinking.

Think of diverfent thinking more like playtime, and convergent thinking as the acutal strategy.

A step by step plan for making those divergent dreams come true.

So if you feel like you haven’t been getting as much done as you should, my guess is you haven’t fully mastered your thinking.

But that’s okay. If you are a subscriber, I’m about to share a 15-minute exercise that will teach you the skill and help you walk away with a clear plan forward.

I’m going to be real: And hit you with a few quick numbers - because as you should already know, good business decisions are always made on data; whether it’s what product to start with or where to invest your time and efforts.

  • There are over 44,000 subscribers to this Substack

  • On average, 37% read it each week, that’s about 16,000 readers.

  • The craziest part: only 600 have become clients (hardly over 1%).

So, when I look at the data, I’m left wondering what I’m doing?

Could I be spending my time better for people who value it?

I set my monthly Substack rate at only $5, which is 16 cents a day. Because I want to see who really values all the time I dedicate to this, and if I should keep doing it.

My ask is fair: if you’ve learned something from me, want to keep learning, or appreciate the time I invest, please subscribe.

TL:DR: “PS - in case you are curious…” and “Lastly, before I go, a few cool things…” will always be free. BUT, subscribing unlocks the best part of this article, the part where I tell you exactly what you need (and don’t need) for a successful production run!

We are headed back to the States… Literally today!

Any way, 24 hours after I land, I have a bridal shower. Then the week after, we have Functional Fabric Fair in NYC at the Javits Center - you can GRAB A FREE TICKET AND JOIN ME HERE!

It’s crazy. We’ve been on the go since February, and I am craving some structure in my life. I’m going to try to settle in and get into some sort of routine… Let’s see.
