Exercises to get you thinking about voice, style, and the creative possibilities of working across languages.

✍️ Workshop Exercises from Cristina

Thanks again for joining our August Audio Club! Here are the exercises Cristina shared with us during the session. These are designed to get you thinking about voice, style, and the creative possibilities of working across languages.

Exercise 1: Mixed Language Text

  • Write a short text in English, but include at least 25% in another language.

  • Do not translate the other language — it must remain integral to the text.

  • Let the two languages coexist naturally as part of one piece.

Exercise 2: A Sentence Becomes a Story

  • Write a very short sentence (up to 5 words) in another language.

  • Build a 1-minute story in English (approx. 200 words) around it.

  • The sentence in the other language must appear inside your story.

Exercise 3: Dialogue Across Languages

  • Write a short dialogue (1–2 minutes).

  • One character speaks English, the other speaks a different language.

  • You decide: do they translate, rephrase, or ignore each other?

  • Make sure it reads as a true dialogue, not two separate monologues.

💡 What do I do next?

  • Watch Cristina’s workshop above.

  • Pick a task and have a go! It doesn’t need to be perfect, just an opportunity to try something different and expand your perspective on how language might be used in storytelling.

  • Send your work to Cristina kommunic8@gmail.com for feedback.
