I’m sure you remember exactly where you were when your president announced the lockdown due to COVID. In France, it was on March 14, 2020. I was at home, sitting in front of my TV. At that time, I was working as an English teacher in a middle school.
The day before, my students told me, “No need to send homework for Monday, madam, we won’t have class.” Well, I gave them homework anyway. Little did I know that I would soon be sending assignments from home and teaching online—struggling with teenagers who, for the most part, didn’t want to focus, and dealing with impatient and sometimes rude parents.
I quickly realized that I couldn’t conduct my lessons the way I used to. I had to get creative. Sure, my students wouldn’t learn as much as before, but the situation was different, and my teaching had to adapt. That’s when I discovered learning apps—platforms that allow you to create interactive games while reinforcing key concepts. Gap-filling exercises, crosswords, drag-and-drop activities, classification games, quizzes… Suddenly, learning became more engaging, even in a remote setting.
After COVID, I never looked back. I kept integrating fun, interactive methods into my teaching. I started using quizzes on their phones, interactive activities, detective games, card games, and board games. And you know what? It worked. The more my students enjoyed the process, the better they remembered the material.
