Human Potential & Resilience · Notes on Human Potential & Resilience

What do you do when reality collapses? When the story you believed about a person, an organization, or your own future no longer matches reality?

Whether in our personal or professional lives, there are moments when life doesn’t simply become difficult. It shatters in front of us.

Not the ordinary disappointments. Not the setbacks we expect. Instead, the moments that fundamentally change how we see reality.

Perhaps it’s a devastating health diagnosis. Perhaps it’s discovering that a friend or work colleague you deeply trusted was never who you believed them to be. Or perhaps it’s the collapse of a career or a future you had quietly built your life around.

I’ve experienced moments like these. Most people do in varying degrees.

One thing I’ve learned is that these moments rarely arrive all at once. Instead, they begin with small inconsistencies.

You notice something that doesn’t quite fit. You question it. Then you question yourself. You think to yourself:

Maybe I’m overreacting. Maybe I misunderstood. Maybe things will change. Maybe they’ll change. Maybe I just need more information.

So you extend the benefit of the doubt. Then you do it again. And again. Until eventually you arrive at a moment where reality has become impossible to deny.

And suddenly the story you’ve been telling yourself no longer matches the evidence in front of you.

What do you do next?
