AlleyCorp in Q1: Valar Atomics and the Future of Nuclear Energy

In 2005, the U.S. generated roughly twice as much electricity as China. Today, those numbers are reversed. In fact, China now generates more electricity than the US, EU, and India combined.

In May of last year, the Trump administration issued a series of executive actions aimed at jumpstarting our energy program, specifically in nuclear innovation. Through a pilot program within the Department of Energy, the aim was to push startups to have at least three nuclear reactors reach criticality by July 4, 2026. One of the companies leading that charge — Valar Atomics (an AlleyCorp portfolio company) — is just a couple of months from accomplishing that goal.

Founded by Isaiah Taylor (whose great grandfather just so happened to be a nuclear physicist on the Manhattan Project), we first invested in Valar Atomics at a $20M pre-money valuation. Valar Atomics is now worth a reported $2 billion, following their latest funding round last month and their announcement last November, becoming the first nuclear startup in history to split an atom.

Just think about that: 100+ nuclear startups that came before it. $10+ billion in funding. And not one had ever split an atom of uranium.

What’s different about Valar is how they’ve approached the problem. Instead of starting with years of theoretical R&D, they began by building a supply chain — sourcing existing components and assembling a system that was designed to be repeatable. The long-term goal is to build a network of small, modular reactors that can deliver reliable power beyond the grid — to data centers, military bases, and remote industrial sites — eventually scaling to produce the world’s energy.

You can’t help but admire that type of ambition.

While there’s still a long road ahead, we love backing a generational vision like Valar’s — one that could reinvent nuclear power and reshape the global energy landscape.

Earlier this month, Transcend Therapeutics (an AlleyCorp incubation) entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by Otsuka Pharmaceutical for $700 million, with consideration for an additional $525 million contingent on future sales milestones.
