Writing became a consistent habit in my spiritual life years ago, as I began to write out the prayers I struggled to articulate. God felt so far away, distant when I would try and use my words. Writing felt more tangible. I still turn to writing to connect with God, nearly every day. It’s a focused space where the pen helps anchor my wandering mind to the ideas I’m trying to express on the page. These hundreds of written prayers will never see the light of day, but every once and while something comes up that I’m inspired to share.

For God is good and light
and love and in all things and
of all things. Including little
me– somehow not immune to
the laws of the universe– me.
Must the focus always go
back to me? Lord let me
be forgetful of myself. Let
me be small in my own eyes;
just a little thing in the grand
scope of eternity. That scares me,
forever. Forever? Sounds like a long,
very long time to be alive in this world
even in the presence of a God,
a God as good as you.
