Why am I such a sucker for a New Year’s resolution? I don’t know. I don’t really stick to them and I can’t even remember what mine were last year. And yet I still love making and talking about them! I suspect last year mine was to stop being insecure and asking for permission to exist. I think I’ve gotten better at this because this past year was so hard it forced me to to become an asshole on an as-needed basis.
Anyway, here’s the round-up for 2026:
Teach Peter Tricks
Peter is my younger dog and he’s very smart. It’s also possible my older dog is just dumb. Either way, in the morning he stares at me waiting to find out what we’re going to be doing. I feel like if I were to ask him to start the coffee and make an omelette he would be relieved. I think he’s wanting direction. And so I plan to teach him tricks. Right now he knows sit, stay, down. But those aren’t fun.
Learn Photoshop/Video Editing
I know the bare minimum of video editing but I kind of hate it. And I don’t know anything about Photoshop. I feel like if I knew these two things I would be unstoppable or at the least commensurate with your average 10 year old. The point is I’m being left behind and I’m tired of depending on other people to do these things for me.
Make My House Work for Me Instead of Against Me
This is the big one. Daniel and I have an arrangement where I get up earlier than he does and get the kids ready for school and he drives them to school. So each morning I do the same series of actions to make breakfast and get them dressed and each morning I’m pushing stuff out of the way and knocking things over and unable to find THE GODDAMN SUNSCREEN WHERE IS THE SUNSCREEN. Every morning. It shouldn’t be this hard. And so I need to just throw out everything that isn’t necessary or put it somewhere else or I don’t know. But I know it shouldn’t be this annoying.
Write Every Week
What am I doing right now? Nailing this one!
Journal Every Day????
Seems excessive TBH
Read Frequently
I always feel good when I’m reading and yet all I ever read is my phone. I should be clear that I mean read books frequently
Watch More Movies
Anything longform with a single point of view (or even a split point of view like unassailable classic He Said/She Said) would be better than the visual and mental barf-scatter of social media that I am constantly shoving into my face
Reconnect With Old Friends
Is there anything more fulfilling than spending time with old friends? Aren’t you always so so happy you made time when you do?
Get Video Up And Running
If my podcast listeners have to hear me talk about getting video for my show up and running any longer they will riot. I have been saying it for so long. And I have done video before. But it’s just not automated in any way that I feel good about. My studio doesn’t look how I want it. The camera angles aren’t ideal. I just want to make it so it’s the same every time and I can just walk in and flip a switch and we’re good to go. I don’t want to feel like we’re lighting a Wes Anderson film every time.
Refresh Graphics
Just feel like my show needs a refresh
New Headshots
self-explanatory
Put Bonus Episodes And Ringtones On Patreon
Is anyone buying ringtones anymore because I am paying a third party service annually for them to be available in iTunes which isn’t even called iTunes anymore. I should really find out if they’re still there. But the point is I can put all my paid bonus content on my Patreon page and people can find and purchase them there.
Grow Patreon
self-explanatory
Achieve Regularity
I’m just so tired of thinking about poop
And there you have it!
