Alex the Mudman Smith · Rhythm Never Retires

Last week I took a little break from the usual routine.

I spent a couple of days over in Brookdale visiting friends, wandered down to Santa Cruz, walked the beach and the boardwalk, and generally slowed life down for a while.

It always reminds me of a line from Donald Fagen’s Maxine on The Nightfly: “We’ll drive to the coast and drive right back again.” Sometimes that’s all the adventure you need.

On the way back I stopped in Columbia and played a little street music with Cactus Bob and Prairie Flower before getting ready for one of my favorite summer events—the Columbia Big Band Street Dance.

The band was swinging all night long. There was plenty of swing dancing, a little disco mixed in, and a dance floor full of smiling people. I sang a few songs with the band, but I spent even more time out on the dance floor. There was plenty of swing dancing, a little disco mixed in, and a whole lot of smiling faces. My Achilles tendon reminded me the next day that I may have overdone it, but while the music was playing, I never noticed it once. I guess that's one of the nice things about getting lost in the music.

As for the book... I had every intention of finishing it during the trip.

Instead, I enjoyed the trip.

No regrets.

The manuscript is getting very close now, and my goal is to finish it this week. If you’re a subscriber and would like a free advance copy before it’s published, just hit Reply and let me know. I’ve had a couple of volunteers already, and I’d love a few more readers to catch anything I might have missed.

I’ve included a few photos from the trip below, along with a little musical bonus. Since Donald Fagen’s Maxine was running through my head most of the drive, I thought I’d share it with you.

Now it’s back to the regular routine—gigs, writing, finishing the book, and seeing where the music takes me next.

Thanks for coming along for the ride.
