Most street photographers spend their time looking for people.
Try looking for stand-ins instead.
A mannequin behind a window.
A reflection mistaken for a person.
A shadow with human form.
A poster that suddenly becomes part of the real world.
The photograph above works because, for a split second, the viewer is confronted by something that resembles a human presence but isn’t human at all. The bars create a sense of separation. The open window suggests access. Yet the subject remains unreachable, emotionless, impossible to connect with.
That tension is where the picture lives.
