Summer has arrived with long days. It returns with warm weather, bright light, and vibrant colors. It is objectively beautiful this time of year. But a masochistic part of me is longing for the winter and its short days. I miss the feeling at 4pm when we’re swallowed by the darkness and are locked inside the house by a frozen landscape that demands we shut our doors and windows.
I think what I specifically miss is how strong the feeling of joy is when we find it in that colorless season. It asks us to color in the world how we see it.
I’ve been having trouble finding words to describe how June 2026 has felt. I’ve had a difficult time writing for myself this past month, so I’ve traded the pen keyboard for the camera, seeing if I can instead capture these elusive feelings with photos.
All of these pictures were lush with greens from the trees and golds from the sun. It’s all the colors of summer we’ve come to expect in the rural northeast. Life is easy and light again.
But in color, this is not honest with how I feel. Life feels hard and heavy. Yet, the energy is positive, not negative. Perhaps it’s all the big changes happening with my interests, hobbies, work, relationships, home, and Wababaland. It feels like I’m headed in a new direction that is still uncomfortable for me.
Life is not black and white. But when the photos are, we can each interpret life as we see it.
