A recent shipment of peppers from Albania to Slovenia was blocked by Slovenian authorities due to the presence of pesticide residues exceeding permitted limits. The specific pesticides found in the peppers were acetamiprid, formetanate, and flonicamide, which are considered harmful to human health. This incident is classified as an “alert” by the RASFF (Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed), indicating a serious risk to consumer health. Albania’s National Food Authority (AKU) has not yet responded to this issue.

The Governor of the Bank of Albania, Gent Sejko, announced that the Albanian economy is performing steadily, resulting in the decision to maintain the base interest rate at 2.5%. Economic growth forecasts are positive for 2025 and 2026, with inflation expected to return to the 3% target in the first half of 2026. The focus is also on reducing cash usage and promoting digital payments, with the implementation of the SEPA system to lower transfer fees.

Prime Minister Edi Rama has shared footage on social media showing the demolition of illegal buildings in Valbona National Park. Rama issued a warning to individuals involved in illegal construction, labeling it as a “lowly sport” and emphasizing that those who persist will face serious consequences. He urged anyone engaging in such activities to stop, as they will only waste money and time, and will be subject to severe repercussions based on the government’s latest decisions.

Translators, linguists, and writers convened at an event focusing on “Translation, Time Boundaries, and Language” to discuss the challenges facing translation in Albania. Linguist Xhevat Lloshi expressed concerns about incorrect language usage spreading online and emphasized the importance of preserving proper Albanian. Translator Ilia Lëngu highlighted the need for a deep understanding of both the foreign language and Albanian itself for professional translation work. Writer and translator Primo Shllako noted the absence of a translation school in Albania, considering it a positive as translators have elevated their Albanian language proficiency. The discussion underscored the importance of higher standards in translation, language education review, and increased collaboration among language professionals to safeguard and enhance the Albanian language.

The Institute of Public Health in Albania reported an increase in breast cancer cases in 2024, with 805 women and 10 men being diagnosed. Despite the rise in numbers, there has been no increase among younger age groups, according to the head of the institute, Dorina Toçi. Health specialists stress the importance of early detection, with 25,000 women undergoing mammography screenings and 50 being diagnosed with breast cancer. Women are encouraged to perform regular self-examinations and screenings after the age of 50.
