Jaimoe and I opened up the Friends of the Brothers show Saturday June 27 with a 35-minute interview. It was a lot of fun! As I’ve noted, we are working together on Jaimoe’s memoir, and have been spending hours a day talking, so the flow is pretty easy. He also played two songs with us - “Midnight Rider” and “Blue Sky.” It’s really hard to describe how special that is, but also how much fun!
We have two more dates with Jaimoe scheduled to play with Friends of the Brothers - July 20 at City Winery NYC and August 7 at Infinity Hall, Hartford. We will probably do these kinds of sessions at both. If you can make one or both, you really should!

As I wrote in the headline, it was no coincidence that Jaimoe was the first guy Duane Allman signed up for his fledgling band and I am proud that the book and everything leading up to it will help make this more and more clear to Allman Brothers Band fans. I really don’t think anyone other than Duane would have heard Jaimoe and understood how he could help transform an outlandishly ambitious vision into reality. All true fans of the ABB know they were different than the rest. “blues with a twist,” “rock with a twist.” JAIMOE WAS THE TWIST.

Brothers and Sisters: the Allman Brothers Band and The Album That Defined The 70s was my third straight book to debut in the New York Times Non-Fiction Hardcover Bestsellers List, following Texas Flood: The Inside Story of Stevie Ray Vaughan and One Way Out: The Inside History of the Allman Brothers Band. My first book was Big in China: My Unlikely Adventures Raising a Family, Playing the Blues and Becoming a Star in Beijing, about my experiences raising a family in Beijing and touring China with a popular original blues band. It was optioned for a movie by Ivan Reitman’s Montecito Productions. I am also a guitarist and singer who fronts two bands, Big in China and Friends of the Brothers, the premier celebration of the Allman Brothers Band.
