Spring is coming, it isn’t too far away. The days are still cold and the snow seems incessant but the warmer temps are on their way. The fields will turn green and the denuded trees will begin to bud. The crocuses will shoot forth and the trilliums will display their showy white flowers. And the first spring arrivals will sing away with cheery voices.
Contrarily, the press, politicians, and pundits continue their dreary tales of conflict, war, exploitation and duplicity. Combined with my own angst this barrage of shaming and blaming weighs heavy on me. Alas, it seems that the world’s painful voices are drowning out the goodness that I know is there.
My Lenten prayer for lightness:
“O Lord, help me to lean into the beauty and joy of your natural world. Help me to focus upon the spectacle of your changing seasons with its outburst of flowering hues and reinvigorated terrain which reminds me of rebirth, renewal and refreshment. I know my spirit will be lifted up if I spend time walking in the forest, along a lake shore, or beside a bubbling brook.
O Lord, may my spirit be restored in you and by the exquisiteness of your creation. May I not be cast down by the voices of complaint, confusion and critique which chatter away in my noisy world.
O Lord, in this season of preparation may I hear again your healing words that fortify and strengthen my faltering steps:
“Do not fear, for I am with you,
do not be afraid for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you,
I will uphold you with my victorious right hand” (Isaiah 41:10)
Amen.
