Diving in Bonaire holds out two possibilities. One can dive the west coast where the seas are calm and the soft corals abound and pleasant schools of fish are easily enjoyed. Or, one can dive the east coast where the seas are rough but larger animals like turtles and eagle rays are abundant. It all depends on what the diver is up for—calm or rough seas, soft corals or ancient critters?
To this point Vincent Van Gogh once observed, “The ebb and tide of the sea continues, but the sea remains the sea.”
The sea remains the sea whether in the storm or the calm, whether the tide rises or ebbs, whether it floods or recedes. The sea remains the sea even as its Maker hovers over its waters.
The Psalmist rejoices in this truth proclaiming,
“The seas have lifted up, O Lord, the seas have lifted up their voice; the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.”
“Mightier than the thunder of the great waves, mightier than the breakers of the sea—the Lord on high is mighty.” (Psalm 93:3-4).
During this season of Lent our emotions will rise and fall. Pains will come and go (hopefully go!). There will be happy days and sad days. Wins and losses. Successes and failures. All carried along amidst the turbulent waters of our messy lives. Nevertheless, (the defiant “nevertheless” of Karl Barth) we are not to give up! Not to give in to despair! The waters will pound against us but our compassionate, caring Lord remains the same, in both promising and challenging times, even as the sea remains the sea.
