Reflecting on my father’s death — 40 days after his passing.

My father and I: we used to be estranged for so many years. Well, he was there technically for less than 20% of my life. My parents got divorced when I was very young, and nothing had ever been the same since.

What started as anger caused by his absence evolved into a constant what-if over various courses of my life. What if he were there when I broke up? Perhaps he’d scold the high school boyfriend who dumped me. What if we were not estranged? Perhaps he’d pick me up when I had to come home late from school, instead of me having to rely on my own self. What if he actually had been looking for me, but could not find me? What if he dies, and I don’t know about it?

The latter became the base of my daily prayers. I constantly prayed to have the chance to see him again before he dies.
