Longevity Is Booming. But What Are We Really Trying to Preserve?

Walk into any wellness and health conference today, and you’ll hear the same words over and over again.

Longevity. Biological age. Cellular rejuvenation. NAD+. Senolytics. Rapamycin. Gene editing. AI-driven health optimization.

It almost feels like humanity has quietly shifted its goal.

Not simply to live well.

But to stay young.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to be healthy. In fact, from a Buddhist perspective, taking care of our physical and mental well-being is part of wise living. Mind you, even enlightenment requires a nourished, healthy foundation of life. Even Śākyamuni, after six years of ascetic practice and before attaining enlightenment, ate a nourishing porridge of milk and rice to restore his strength, didn’t he?

This body is the vehicle through which we practice kindness, wisdom, and compassion, and contribute to society. Neglecting it isn’t a virtue.

But somewhere along the way, the conversation around longevity has started to reveal something deeper: our strong desire to live, and our attachment to youth.

Attachment to youth isn’t a new concept. It’s been with us for as long as civilization has existed, woven into human nature, especially for those who held power, wealth, and resources. Rulers, kings, landlords, owners. And today, billionaires and millionaires. Jeffrey Epstein and his circle, who reportedly flirted with transhumanism and dreams of “seeding” humanity with their own DNA. Basically, people who’ve accumulated something they don’t want to lose, and want to hold onto for as long as possible on this earth.

Around the world, governments, biotech companies, Silicon Valley tech moguls, and investors are pouring billions into longevity research.

Scientists are exploring drugs like rapamycin, which has extended lifespan in multiple animal models - a finding the National Institute on Aging has replicated across independent labs. Others are studying senolytics, compounds designed to clear out aging (”senescent”) cells. Researchers continue investigating NAD+ metabolism, epigenetic reprogramming, AI-powered biomarker analysis, organ regeneration, and personalized medicine. The goal isn’t only to treat disease, but to slow aging itself. While some findings are promising, many interventions remain experimental, and the evidence in healthy humans is still limited. What works in a mouse hasn’t yet been shown to work in us.
