Do you give your books away for free to people? Bad move.
As an author, I have done so in the past. More so since I had hundreds or thousands of copies – the initial lot were self-published. Only later did I realize the futility of it.
Even when recipients showed hesitancy in accepting them, I pressed on. I doubt if most were read. If they were, barely anyone gave me feedback.
If you are a published author, here are some things to keep in mind before giving your books away for free:
1. It may not result in increased readership as you hope for. It is delusional to think your books have readers with this approach.
2. If someone has not read the book, how will word-of-mouth recommendations happen?
3. Don’t feel vain about (free) books in people’s hands; these are not sales.
4. Books cost money, whether self-published or purchased from your publishers. Why give these to those who do not intend to add value to your marketing efforts?
5. You should definitely not thrust your books upon others. If someone says they can’t accept it, or will not be able to read, respect their honesty rather than be offended.
6. If you built cars or televisions, will you give those away for free? Why a book then? Put a value to your work.
7. Save copies to share with media, influencers and those who are likely to read and spread the word.
8. Of course, if someone gives you less-than-flattering feedback to your work, don’t get offended. Use it to reflect and improve.
9. Even if you are not writing to make money, free copies are a no-no.
