Overthinking is often dismissed as personality:“I’m just an overthinker.” But in Islam, it’s deeper because It’s a battlefield.
Between:
•Your nafs (self)
•Your ‘aql (intellect)
•And the whispers of Shaytan (waswasah).
it’s a loop of thoughts then doubt then fear then more thoughts and more fear.
Until your chest feels tight and your heart feels tired. Islam breaks that loop early.
The Prophet ﷺ didn’t suggest you “journal” your intrusive thoughts or “negotiate” with them. He taught a Hard Reset.”If one of you experiences doubts let him stop it.” (Bukhari) note here, he didn’t say analyze it, nor explore it and not spiral.
He said Stop it. This is what modern psychology calls thought interruption.
When doubts or intrusive thoughts come, he ﷺ taught:
“Let him say: Āmantu billāh.” (I believe in Allah)
Why? Because overthinking often comes from:lack of control, fear of outcomes & “what if” scenarios
By declaring belief, you collapse infinite “What Ifs” into a single, unshakeable “What Is.”The Prophet ﷺ also said:
“Seek refuge in Allah from Shayṭān.”
Because not every thought is you. Some thoughts are whispers. Not every fear deserves your attention. So Seek Refuge from Shayṭan
Tie It With Tawakkul
Birds don’t overthink the weather; they fly. They exert 100% effort in the present while maintaining 0% anxiety about the result.
1. Work with intensity.
2. Delegate the outcome to Al-Wakil (The Disposer of Affairs).
3. Close the file.
Replace “What if” with “Qaddarallahu wa ma sha’a fa’al” (Allah decreed, and He did what He willed).
The Prophet ﷺ taught: “Know that what has passed you by was never going to befall you.”
If you cannot change the outcome, the thought is a waste of metabolic energy. If X is decreed, worry is redundant. If X is not decreed, worry is delusional.
Stop Comparing (The Theft of Barakah)
Comparison is the arrogant belief that Allah gave someone else “your” Rizq. It is a rejection of your own path.
The Prophet ﷺ taught: “Look at those who are below you and do not look at those who are above you, for it is more suitable that you do not look down on the blessings of Allah.”
Your timeline is not late. It’s written.
THE PROPHET ﷺ GAVE YOU A KILL-SWITCH
When your mind starts spiraling:
1.Stop the thought immediately
2.Say: Āmantu billāh
3.Say: A‘ūdhu billāhi min ash-shayṭān ir-rajīm
4.Shift your attention (dhikr, movement, wudhu, salah)
5.Remind yourself: Allah is already in control
The Pen has been lifted. The Ink is dry.
Always remember, Your worry does not move the needle of Qadr (Decree) by a single atom. It only moves the needle of your health toward illness.
