OpenAI’s petition to trademark GPT gets ‘rejected'.
[The News] OpenAI recently filed a petition with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in December 2022 — a month after ChatGPT was launched.

OpenAI wanted to trademark the word “GPT” as there was a lot of hype around chatGPT and so many new tools were coming out to capitalize on the hype around chatGPT using the word GPT in their company name.
By filing for a trademark rather than a copyright, OpenAI seeks to prevent others from releasing technology under their name while still allowing the use of their technology with proper attribution.
GPT stands explicitly for ‘generative pre-trained transformer’. Which means a program or tool which is trained to write like humans! Who would have thought they were serious about actually building something like this?
There were two reasons why the petition was rejected.
“Your request cannot be construed as an informal petition to make special because it is incomplete and missing the petition fee!”
Noted the USPTO.
I find it funny that OpenAI didn’t pay the associated petition fee!
USPTO also said, “OpenAI hasn’t submitted the required supporting evidence of the action they have taken against the infringer.” OpenAI, as per USPTO, should have submitted “a copy of a relevant civil court complaint, cease-and-desist letter.”
However, some Reddit and HackerNews users didn’t like it. They stated that the company didn’t introduce the term “GPT” first, as GPT-1 was first introduced in 2018. The term “Generative pre-trained” can be found in earlier Google research papers. Google was chilling while OpenAI was drilling. I mean Google is the one who built TensorFlow, a library used in machine learning, which is used to build tech like chatGPT.
Now Google is also planning to merge DeepMind and Google Brain into a single entity like Microsoft and OpenAI did.
“OpenAI has registered AI.com to redirect to ChatGPT, making a strong move in the AI market.”
It could’ve had a really bad impact on GPT-based products, but it’s good for them that’s not the case.
But still, OpenAI is determined to protect its brand and technology in the evolving AI space.
