In texts made public by the Musk v. Altman lawsuit, Elon Musk described a rival lab’s approach to AI as “one mind to rule the world” and “really bad news.”

Around the same time, Sam Altman texted a colleague the quieter version from the other side: better for OpenAI to become “increasingly kings of this industry,” since being “the kings of AI is not so bad.”

Two men, one nightmare, each certain he is the exception.

The case is finished now. Going by the reporting, Musk did not get what he wanted. I have not read the ruling itself, so I’ll leave the legal conclusion to the lawyers.

But the most telling thing about the case is not what it settled. It is what it never touched.
