Kai-Ting Yang and Talese Hunt · Aha Atlas Newsletter

July 2022

Welcome to the 16th issue of the Aha Atlas Newsletter! This month, we’re talking about how to teach an athletic class. Meaning, Pilates for athletes, HIIT lovers, your friend (or foe) who thinks Pilates is stretching. 😈

Learn how to program your own athletic class. Then move through a sweaty mini class with Talese. Grow with us by exploring ways to cue an athletic class (yes, you can make it quite different than traditional Pilates cueing!). And finally, chill with us as we share our favorite ways to warm up to, and cool down from, a day of teaching.

👀 the new format this month in the Learn and Grow Sections. We filmed them in the podcast style. We think it feels more intimate, like we’re all chatting at the studio on a break. But let us know what you think about this format. Do you love or hate it? Respond to this email, or drop us a note on Instagram or TikTok. 💌

Try upgrading your subscription this month. With the Member Edition, you’ll get full access to videos and member perks (for this issue AND all past issues).

Let’s explore a teaching concept.

No matter where you and your clients score yourselves on athleticism, this video will empower you to improve your athletic skills through your Pilates class program. You’ll feel fierce when faced with carrying your groceries, dodging out-of-control scooters, or improving your PB in that weekend race! 🏆

Move with us in this mini-class (10-20 minutes).

Slow & steady wins the race in this athletic skills mini class with Talese. She’ll ease you in with stability and coordination, and by the end you’ll feel energized and powerful!

Props: Just you and your mat. To modify, have a pillow or bolster handy. To add challenge, try standing on a pillow or BOSU for the final section!

Boost your confidence and resilience with us.

In this video, we explore a cueing style that’s perfect for athletic classes. It’s called Motivational Cueing. Join us as we discuss what it is, and why you may want to incorporate it into your teaching.

Come chill with us.

Teaching athletic classes takes a special kind of energy. So it’s especially important to warm up and cool down on those teaching days. Here are some of our favorite ways to warm up to, and cool down from, a day of teaching.

Warm Up

  • Talese: Music is my biggest motivator! I love listening to an energizing playlist like this one.

  • Kai-Ting: 10 Squats, 10 Jumping Jacks, 30 seconds of my silliest twisty dance moves, and a pep talk to myself (“You can do this!”).

Cool Down

  • Talese: I love watching funny shows before bed. Currently loving Girls5eva.

  • Kai-Ting: What I want to do (take a Pilates class, or give myself a gua sha facial). What I actually do (shop for leggings online and fall asleep on the couch).
