August seems to be a popular time for people (us included) to take a break and enjoy some time off. That explains why there are only a few events happening in Veneto this month. However, there are some fantastic climate-focused festivals and events taking place all across Italy and Europe that you should check out! We’ve made a selection for our August edition so that you can enjoy summer vibes and still be conscious about the planet. 💚🌍

What we have been up to lately

At the beginning of the month, Alex visited the Cooling Solutions exhibit (we hope you had a chance to visit it before it ended in July!). The show was highly insightful, using a mix of photography and scientific information to shed light on how people around the world are adapting to increasing temperatures and humidity. While seeing how AC use (and need) will grow in the coming years was eye-opening, the exhibit was not all doom and gloom. The silver lining is that there are, in fact, architectural and energy efficiency solutions that we could employ to keep cool while temperatures rise globally. 🌡️

When it comes to ways to stay fresh during the summer without using AC, we suggest taking a look at the Cool Life project. It provides valuable tips and tricks for keeping cool. ❄️

Alex also visited the Architecture Biennale pavilions in Giardini. She recommends checking out Denmark’s pavilion, which explores various nature-based solutions for dealing with floods and storm surges. The exhibit doesn’t solely focus on Copenhagen, investigating the similarities between the low-lying ground of the Copenhagen region and most of the Netherlands, as well as Venice and Veneto. She also very much enjoyed Belgium’s pavilion, looking into fungus as a future building material, and Finland’s playful approach convincing us to use less water by installing dry toilets. 🚽

On July 20th, we also participated in the first online meeting of the Venice Climate Observatory, organized by EuCliPA.IT. The discussion focused on planning how the working group will prepare for the Energy and Climate Action Plan that the Venice Municipality should release in the autumn of this year.

🌓 San Lorenzo Night - Concert for 7 sculptures and 7 musicians

What? On the occasion of San Lorenzo Night, artists Petrit Halilaj & Álvaro Urbano will repropose the activation of the installation "Lunar Ensemble for Uprising Seas" part of the exhibition "Thus waves come in pairs" in the form of "Concert for 7 sculptures and 7 musicians". The performance is part of the larger program of the evening, celebrating summer, the San Lorenzo complex, the phenomenon of shooting stars, and reminding us of the interconnection between sky and sea, moon and tides.

🏙️ Governing, Designing and Educating Urban Futures

What? Not necessarily a climate event, but given that cities are responsible for over two-thirds of the global greenhouse gas emissions, changing how cities are governed is essential in tackling climate, but also social issues. The event brings together mayors, social scientists, designers, and educators, investigating how innovations in urban governance, planning, and education can bring about transformative change.

Green and Climate-friendly festivals this Summer!

ITALY

🐚 Festa Ambiente Sud

What? Festambiente Sud, the itinerant festival by Legambiente for Southern Italy, offers concerts, walks, forums, and agrifood in various locations in the Gargano. More than a music festival, the event was created with the aim of spreading greater environmental awareness through music and numerous cultural activities and experiences. Last day!

When? 13 July - 5 August

🍃 RisorgiMarche

What? RisorgiMarche is a festival of solidarity for the rebirth of the communities hit by the 2016 earthquake, conceived and promoted by actor Neri Marcorè. Participation turns out to be a sort of lay pilgrimage, a eulogy to slowness, a way to reconcile with nature, not alone but recreating a community, and to support the territories, people, and businesses affected by the earthquake that devastated many areas in the Marche region.

The locations are chosen based on representativeness, beauty, safety, and the protection of biodiversity.

⛰️ Mountain Future Festival 2023

What? If you love the Dolomites, you shouldn’t miss out on this: from 11 July to 8 October 2023, the Paganella Plateau will host the fifth edition of the Mountain Future Festival: an event "from the heart and from the mind" dedicated to the mountains and their possible futures from an environmental, economic, tourism and quality of life point of view.

🌲 Umbria Green Festival - Il Festival ad impacto zero dove la natura fa spettacolo

What? Umbria Green Festival realised within the framework of the Public Notice for proposals of initiatives supporting the implementation of the National Strategy for Sustainable Development - Sector 'Culture of Sustainability' (SNSVS3). Winner of the Culture in Green Award 2022 for having distinguished itself for its CO2 reduction practices throughout Umbria through innovative and cutting-edge solutions. Its dense and interesting programme aims to implement a Copernican revolution that can put listening to our needs and those of the planet back at the centre.

THE REST OF EUROPE

⚡ Green Gathering

What? Green Gathering is an off-grid festival, i.e., completely independent in terms of resources. The entire festival is powered by renewable energy (solar and wind), and in between shows, you can enjoy vegan food and participate in upcycling and permaculture screenings and workshops.

Music: radical punk, psychedelic, folk, swing, dance, ska, reggae, rap, cabaret, and poetry.

🎵 Green Man

What? Green Man is an established music festival hosted for the last 20 years in the magical scenery of a Welsh mountain valley. Appreciated for the top line-up, exquisite atmosphere, and intimacy, it has also built a name for itself as an event taking sustainability and environmental impact seriously. 🥾 Soča Valley Hiking Festival

What? The Soča Valley Hiking Festival is an opportunity to discover Slovenia's rich cultural, historical, and natural heritage accompanied by expert guides. The festival includes organised excursions suitable for both families and experienced hiking enthusiasts. During the festival, you can visit exhibitions and museums, attend lectures and events or explore local culinary traditions. Plus you can easily get there from Venice by train!

💫 Terraforma

What? Terraforma is a music festival held in the woods of Villa Arconati, near Milan. The organisation aims to restore and reforest the area and involves craftsmen, artists, and students from the Milan Polytechnic for its installations. The stage was created with wood salvaged from a severe weather episode that hit north-eastern Italy in 2018, and the festival takes measures to reduce plastic, energy, and water waste.

🌳 Forest of Imagination

What? Assemble in the Forest is an invitation to come together at a festival full of adventure, to enjoy culture, to celebrate beauty and biodiversity, and to showcase the imagination of our community. As the world struggles with a climate emergency, COVID aftermath, and injustice – this is the time to collectively and creatively imagine how things can be different.

Given the high temperatures we've been experiencing and inspired by the Cooling Solutions exhibit, Alex really enjoyed reading about how heat pumps can also actually cool homes. Michael Thomas, who also writes the Distilled newsletter, explains not only how heat pumps are the most energy-efficient systems to cool (and heat) a home but also the science behind how heat pumps work to cool indoor air. 🆒

We know it’s the holiday period, but if you’re looking for a social impact career, Gosia recommends that you check out the Bloom - newsletter focused on exciting job opportunities, inspiring resources & grants, and stories of diverse businesses revolutionising the impact field. 🌸

Agosto sembra essere un periodo molto gettonato dalle persone (noi compresi) per prendersi una pausa e godersi un po' di tempo libero. Per questo motivo, questo mese in Veneto ci sono solo pochi eventi. Tuttavia, ci sono alcuni fantastici festival ed eventi incentrati sul clima che si svolgono in tutta Italia e in Europa e che dovreste visitare! Ne abbiamo fatto una selezione per la nostra edizione di agosto, in modo che possiate godervi le vibrazioni estive e avere comunque un occhio di riguardo per il pianeta. 💚🌍

Cosa abbiamo fatto di recente

All'inizio del mese, Alex ha visitato la mostra "Cooling Solutions" (speriamo che abbiate avuto la possibilità di visitarla prima che finisse a luglio!). La mostra è stata molto interessante, utilizzando un mix di fotografie e informazioni scientifiche per far luce su come le persone di tutto il mondo si stanno adattando all'aumento delle temperature e dell'umidità. Sebbene vedere come l'uso (e il bisogno) di aria condizionata crescerà nei prossimi anni abbia aperto gli occhi, la mostra non è stata tutta una tragedia. Ha portato un po' di fortuna suggerendo soluzioni architettoniche e di efficienza energetica che possiamo utilizzare per mantenere il fresco mentre le temperature aumentano a livello globale. 🌡️

Per quanto riguarda i modi per rimanere freschi durante l'estate senza usare l'aria condizionata, suggeriamo di dare un'occhiata al progetto Cool Life. Fornisce preziosi suggerimenti e trucchi per mantenersi freschi. ❄️

Alex ha visitato anche i padiglioni della Biennale di Architettura ai Giardini. Consiglia di visitare il padiglione della Danimarca, che esplora varie soluzioni basate sulla natura per affrontare le inondazioni e le tempeste. La mostra non si concentra solo su Copenaghen, ma analizza le analogie tra i terreni bassi della regione di Copenaghen e la maggior parte dei Paesi Bassi, nonché Venezia e il Veneto. Ha apprezzato molto anche il padiglione del Belgio, che analizza il fungo come futuro materiale da costruzione, e l'approccio giocoso della Finlandia, che ci convince a usare meno acqua installando servizi igienici a secco. 🚽

Il 20 luglio abbiamo partecipato al primo incontro online dell'Osservatorio sul clima di Venezia, organizzato da EuCliPA.IT. La discussione si è concentrata sulla pianificazione di come il gruppo di lavoro si preparerà al Piano d'azione per l'energia e il clima che il Comune di Venezia dovrebbe pubblicare nell'autunno di quest'anno.

🌓 Notte di San Lorenzo - Concerto per 7 sculture e 7 musicisti

Cosa? In occasione della Notte di San Lorenzo, gli artisti Petrit Halilaj & Álvaro Urbano riproporranno l'attivazione dell'installazione "Lunar Ensemble for Uprising Seas" parte della mostra "Thus waves come in pairs" sotto forma di "Concerto per 7 sculture e 7 musicisti". La performance si inserisce nel più ampio programma della serata, che celebra l'estate, il complesso di San Lorenzo, il fenomeno delle stelle cadenti e ci ricorda l'interconnessione tra cielo e mare, luna e maree.

Cosa? Non è necessariamente un evento sul clima, ma dato che le città sono responsabili di oltre due terzi delle emissioni globali di gas serra, cambiare il modo in cui le città sono governate è essenziale per affrontare le questioni climatiche, ma anche sociali. L'evento riunisce sindaci, scienziati sociali, progettisti ed educatori, indagando su come le innovazioni nella governance urbana, nella pianificazione e nell'educazione possano portare a un cambiamento trasformativo.

Cosa? RisorgiMarche è un festival di solidarietà per la rinascita delle comunità colpite dal terremoto del 2016, ideato e promosso dall'attore Neri Marcorè. La partecipazione si rivela una sorta di pellegrinaggio laico, un elogio alla lentezza, un modo per riconciliarsi con la natura, non da soli ma ricreando una comunità, e per sostenere i territori, le persone, le imprese colpite dal sisma che ha devastato molte zone delle Marche.

I luoghi sono basati su rappresentatività, bellezza, sicurezza e tutela della biodiversità.

⛰️ Mountain Future Festival 2023

Cosa? Se amate le Dolomiti, non potete mancare: dall'11 luglio all'8 ottobre 2023, l'Altopiano della Paganella ospiterà la quinta edizione del Mountain Future Festival: un evento "del cuore e della mente" dedicato alla montagna e al suo possibile futuro dal punto di vista ambientale, economico, turistico e della qualità della vita.

🌲 Umbria Green Festival - Il Festival ad impacto zero dove la natura fa spettacolo

Cosa? Festival realizzato nell’ambito dell’Avviso pubblico per proposte di iniziative a supporto dell’attuazione della Strategia Nazionale per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile – Vettore “Cultura della sostenibilità” (SNSVS3). Vincitore del Premio Cultura in Verde 2022 per essersi distinto per le pratiche di riduzione di CO2 sull’intero territorio dell’Umbria attraverso delle soluzioni innovative e all’avanguardia, grazie a un programma davvero fitto e interessante si pone l’obiettivo di attuare una rivoluzione copernicana che possa rimettere al centro l’ascolto dei nostri bisogni e di quelli del pianeta. Tra le tante azioni green, vi è anche la compensazione dell’impatto prodotto per un festival ad emissioni nette zero.

⚡ Green Gathering

Cosa? Il Green Gathering è un festival off-grid, cioè completamente indipendente in termini di risorse. L'intero festival è alimentato da energia rinnovabile (solare ed eolica) e, tra uno spettacolo e l'altro, è possibile gustare cibo vegano e partecipare a proiezioni e laboratori di upcycling e permacultura.

Musica: punk radicale, psichedelica, folk, swing, dance, ska, reggae, rap, cabaret e poesia.

🎵 Green Man

Cosa? Il Green Man è un affermato festival musicale ospitato da 20 anni nel magico scenario di una valle montana gallese. Apprezzato per la sua line-up di alto livello, l'atmosfera squisita e l'intimità, si è anche costruito un nome come evento che prende sul serio la sostenibilità e l'impatto ambientale. Cosa? Il Festival escursionistico della Valle dell'Isonzo è un'occasione per scoprire il ricco patrimonio culturale, storico e naturale della Slovenia accompagnati da guide esperte. Il festival prevede escursioni organizzate adatte sia alle famiglie che agli escursionisti esperti. Durante il festival è possibile visitare mostre e musei, partecipare a conferenze ed eventi o esplorare le tradizioni culinarie locali. Inoltre, è possibile raggiungerlo facilmente da Venezia in treno!

💫 Terraforma

Cosa? Terraforma è un festival musicale che si svolge nei boschi di Villa Arconati, vicino a Milano. L'organizzazione mira a ripristinare e riforestare l'area e coinvolge artigiani, artisti e studenti del Politecnico di Milano per le sue installazioni. Il palco è stato realizzato con il legno recuperato da un grave episodio atmosferico che ha colpito il nord-est dell'Italia nel 2018, e il festival adotta misure per ridurre gli sprechi di plastica, energia e acqua.

🌳 Forest of Imagination

Cosa? Assemble in the Forest è un invito a riunirsi in un festival pieno di avventure, a godere della cultura, a celebrare la bellezza e la biodiversità e a mostrare l'immaginazione della nostra comunità. Mentre il mondo lotta contro l'emergenza climatica, le conseguenze del COVID e l'ingiustizia, questo è il momento di immaginare collettivamente e creativamente come le cose possano essere diverse.

Viste le alte temperature che stiamo vivendo e ispirato dalla mostra Cooling Solutions, Alex si è davvero divertita a leggere come le pompe di calore possano effettivamente raffreddare le case. Michael Thomas, che scrive anche la newsletter Distilled, spiega non solo come le pompe di calore siano i sistemi più efficienti dal punto di vista energetico per raffreddare (e riscaldare) una casa, ma anche la scienza alla base del funzionamento delle pompe di calore per raffreddare l'aria interna. 🆒
