Did Fauci Help Kill ABC’s COVID Lab-Leak Story?

For years, Americans who questioned whether COVID-19 could have emerged from a laboratory in Wuhan were mocked, censored, and branded conspiracy theorists by much of the corporate media and public-health establishment.

Now, a former senior ABC News correspondent is offering a disturbing look behind the curtain—claiming his own network dramatically altered a 2021 Nightline investigation into the lab-leak theory after, he says, he was told, the story was reviewed by Dr. Anthony Fauci.

Former ABC News correspondent Terry Moran described the episode during an appearance on The Fifth Column podcast. According to Moran, the original report examined the possibility of a laboratory origin and included an interview with Jamie Metzl, a prominent early advocate for seriously investigating whether SARS-CoV-2 could have escaped from a Wuhan laboratory.

Moran said the two-part report had been thoroughly worked on and was preparing to air when, on the day of broadcast, it was suddenly subjected to another review.

When Moran demanded to know what was happening, he said he was given one name: Fauci.

Podcast host Michael Moynihan pressed Moran on whether ABC had actually sent the report or its contents to Fauci. Moran stressed that he could not independently verify exactly what had been shared but said that was what he had been told inside the network.

When the piece came back, Moran said it had been changed so dramatically that he found it virtually unrecognizable.

“The day that it’s supposed to air, it gets reviewed and it comes back to me, and it is incomprehensible,” Moran recalled, describing himself as furious over what happened.

Moran’s allegation deserves serious scrutiny because it goes directly to a question Americans have been asking since the pandemic: Were powerful government officials allowed to influence the journalists who were supposed to be investigating them?

There is an important distinction. Moran has not produced evidence showing that Fauci personally ordered ABC News to censor or rewrite his report, and Moran himself acknowledged that he cannot independently confirm what Fauci received or what role he personally played.

But if ABC did give Fauci an opportunity to review sensitive investigative reporting concerning a controversy in which Fauci and his agency were themselves major players, Americans deserve to know exactly why.

Journalism is supposed to hold government power accountable—not give government officials an unofficial veto over uncomfortable reporting.

For conservatives who watched dissenting voices get silenced throughout the pandemic, Moran’s account is especially significant. Americans were repeatedly told to “trust the experts,” while questions about Wuhan, U.S.-funded research, gain-of-function experiments, and government transparency were frequently treated as misinformation instead of legitimate subjects for investigation.

Years later, the lab-leak hypothesis can no longer honestly be dismissed as some fringe internet theory.

A Republican-led House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic concluded in its 2024 final report that COVID-19 “most likely emerged from a laboratory in Wuhan, China.” The committee also argued that the influential Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2 paper was used by government officials and media organizations to push back against the lab-leak hypothesis.

The Trump White House has since adopted that conclusion publicly. Its official COVID-origins page argues that a laboratory-related incident is the most likely explanation and directly accuses Fauci of helping promote the natural-origin narrative. Those remain the Trump administration’s conclusions rather than an uncontested scientific consensus, but they represent an extraordinary reversal from the way the theory was treated during the early pandemic.

FOLLOW US ON RUMBLE

Questions surrounding Fauci’s pandemic-era decision-making have also intensified.

Senator Rand Paul released Fauci’s private pandemic journals this summer, bringing renewed attention to what Fauci was saying and considering privately while public officials were attempting to determine the virus’s origin. Reporting on those journals shows Fauci repeatedly discussed the origins controversy and remained deeply engaged with the public messaging surrounding the pandemic.

That matters because scientific uncertainty is one thing. Presenting uncertain questions to the American public as though dissent had already been discredited is another.

Congressional investigators have separately spent years examining the origins debate, EcoHealth Alliance’s work, U.S. funding connected to coronavirus research in Wuhan, and whether federal officials were sufficiently transparent with Congress and the American people.

The House coronavirus subcommittee ultimately concluded that NIH oversight mechanisms were deeply deficient and that EcoHealth Alliance used U.S. taxpayer funding to facilitate risky research in Wuhan. HHS later formally debarred EcoHealth Alliance and its former president, Peter Daszak, from receiving federal funding for five years.

Fauci’s battle with congressional investigators has now escalated even further.

On July 29, 2026, Fauci repeatedly invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination while appearing under subpoena before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Republicans led by Sen. Rand Paul subsequently voted along party lines to hold him in contempt of Congress. Paul has sought a Justice Department referral, while Fauci’s attorneys and Democrats argue that he had a constitutional right to invoke the Fifth and accuse Republicans of conducting a politically motivated investigation.

Fauci has since declined a separate request to voluntarily appear before another Senate panel led by Sen. Ron Johnson. His attorneys described the continuing congressional investigations as harassment, while Republican senators say unanswered questions about the government’s pandemic response demand further testimony.

The dispute is therefore no longer simply about where COVID-19 originated. It is about whether unelected bureaucracies were honest with the American people.
