These resources explore the process of designing, installing and commissioning two Central HPWHs at a large affordable housing complex in the Pacific Northwest.

CalMTA received approval from CPUC and issued its first market transformation initiative request for proposal for room heat pumps. With the 5-0 decision from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to fund the first market transformation initiatives (MTI) in California, CalMTA been moving forward with an announcement and a request for proposals (RFP) for the Room Heat Pumps MTI. The Induction Cooking MTI, which was conditionally approved, will move to implementation later in 2026

CalNEXT study on split heat pump water heaters - VEIC released its final report for the CalNEXT Multifamily Split-System Heat Pump Water Heater Market Study. The study examines the emerging role of split-system heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) as a solution for space-constrained multifamily buildings in California. Read the report here

CalNEXT study on HPWH paired with existing gas water heater - TRC and Frontier Energy recently completed a CalNext field demonstration project that explored the efficacy of installing a heat pump water heater in-series with an existing tanked gas water heater in a restaurant setting. As part of our manufacturer interview with Navien in November, we included an image that showed “new” HPWH manufacturers that have come to market with HPWHs over the last several years. Some of our readers suggested that we show all major HPWH manufacturers and we updated the article accordingly. We’ve included both relevant images here as well and will be updating the AWHI website in early 2026 up-to-date information on both residential and commercial HPWHs.
