'Twas the night before Christmas A.K.A. Christmas Eve A night full of miracles For those that believe...
With all the workaday stress of daily obligations and responsibilities, the added anxiety of the holidays can be a bit overwhelming, y’know..? What with all the planning and pivoting when the plan goes to pot... Also, having Giving Tuesday show up in December this year instead of November didn’t help matters. As a result, I’d been playing catchup all month, and every day, it seemed as if for each item I checked off of my To-Do list, two more would appear in its place. 😩
Then, finally, all too soon, today had arrived. There was still so much to do and no time left, in which to do it. I’d accomplished a lot, to be sure, but not nearly as much as I had wanted to. So, with only hours left until Christmas, I went out into the world to spread a little human kindness. It did not take long for me to be reminded of just how big a difference technology has made in the lives of people on the street…
I met Tacuma here, in Harvard Square, and handed him a Pocket Pack in exchange for this photo. Note the Cash App link at the end of his conventional cardboard sign. Yes, the times may change, but the problem remains the same.
Although the homeless of this age can accomplish more in ten minutes, on a mobile phone, than I could have back in the day, in an hour spent at an Internet café like CyberSmith, the trade-off, however, is the lack of bookstores and local cafés. But, even that trend may be on the mend. I’ve been meaning to check out the Page & Leaf in Porter Square. Anyhow, I digress…
So, back to the mission at hand… Earlier today, on the Red Line heading towards Harvard, I encountered this young woman and offered her a Pocket Pack as well…
She was bundled up against the cold, and I could not help but think of how easy it is for most of us, with all the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping, squeezed in between work and day-to-day life, to lose sight of just how much we take for granted. So this holiday season, if you’ve not already done so, I’d like to ask everyone who reads this to take a moment to catch your breath, put aside the anxiety (don’t worry, it’ll still be there waiting for you when you’re done), and just find one thing that you are appreciative of and hold on to that thought for as long as you need to. Okay. That’s it. That’s my gift to you all. Merry Christmas to all, and to all… those that celebrate Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, Chag Hanukkah sameach, and Heri za Kwanzaa respectively.
