Hello, and welcome to another Wednesday. As many of you already seem to know, (if the inundation of notifications to my inbox is any indication), today is my birthday. For me it is a day of reflection; of looking back over the year and comparing it to those that came before. Over the past few days, I put together a few Pocket Packs to carry with me on my daily commute, and I’ve also been slowly, moving my newsletter to its new home here at Substack.
Unfortunately, on Monday evening, I received notice that there is to be a fire safety inspection of the building today (there’s also another, more general inspection from the city of Boston, scheduled the day after New Year’s). So in preparation for this most recent reminder that our building is being sold, I spent some time clearing out, cleaning up, and sorting through an assortment of stuff. At some point, during the evening, I decided to rummage through a very particular box, high up on the shelf. You know the one; the one in which you keep the memories of your past self.
Inside it lay fragments of a forgotten self, and a reminder of the path on which I trode.
This, from a kindred spirit, in whose company, I had not thought to find myself again…
It has been three decades since I first read these words, but they ring as true now, as they did then. There will always be those who need a little kindness, but today, I have decided to be kind to myself, and if any of you are so inclined, I invite you to be kind to me too.
