I went to Hiroshima a couple years ago in September and I literally still think about this trip today - it was a mix of everything including perfect temperature to cycle around, it’s incredibly walkable, the food is amazing and history is extremely harrowing but important.
Just under two hours on plane or four hours on shinkansen, it’s a good one to stop at if you’re already around Kyoto on your Japan tour (about an hour and a half/ £40ish one way).
I’d recommend a three day trip - perfectly contained for you to go to all the sights, eat the most important food and do a day trip.
The hotels in Hiroshima aren’t particularly breathtaking (or I’m yet to find one) but as long as you’re central or near the big park you should be fine!
There is truly only one place you need to go for breakfast, and its Hiroshima Curry Bread Labratory Noboricho Store - curry is famous in Hiroshima and if you want a Japanese experience (and also a filling breakfast on the go), this is it. They have so many types of curry bread (my favourites were the original one and the beef curry in a charcoal dough) as well as sandwiches like classic egg mayo, but also duck. Came here every day (creature of habit, I’m trying to break free lol)
A few afternoon coffee spots to pin that are cute and local are:
NICE coffee stand
OBSCURA COFFEE ROASTERS Hondori
MAPS Bakery and Cafe
As a small side note, I really loved just sitting by the river with a coffee or tinny and snacks and relaxing.
