Missed a week thanks to Greece and lots of cooking so I owe you a chonkeh guide this week. Before you start planning for your September/ October trips out to Japan, I thought I’d actually do my big guide. Yes Tokyo is amazing, and even two weeks in the city alone isn’t enough, but if you’re going to do a whistle-stop tour this is the way to go.
One of my friends came out last year and we ended up doing a very rushed tour of the country, hitting Tokyo > Kyoto > Kobe > Osaka on a hangover > Arima (heavenly tiny village for onsen)> Tokyo all in the space of 7 days. Far too rushed but a good starting point on making my 10 day route even bigger and better. I’m aware Japan is such a far once in a lifetime seeming trip but I’m hoping this taster will keep you wanting more.
You’re going to start off in Tokyo, please please please fly into Haneda airport - it’s far superior, takes about 25 minutes to get a cab into Shibuya or Shinjuku or an hour train. Narita is in the middle of nowhere, it’s so far out and way crustier so do yourself a favour.
I mentioned a few areas to stay here but some recommendations that I commonly give out are Mustard Hotel Shimokitazawa, sequence Miyashita Park, TRUNK if you want somewhere a little nicer (the one by Yoyogi park is especially nice).
Spend 2-3 days here getting rid of jet lag and familiarising yourself with the city - it’s overwhelming and busy but street signs are in English too and people are generally very helpful.
