What Is Christmas?
In the Christian faith, Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It marks the moment God stepped into human history, God in flesh (the Incarnation).
He laid aside His glory, took on humanity, and entered a broken world so that He could suffer, die, and rise again for your sins and my sins, making reconciliation with God possible. This is the story of salvation. Christmas is God’s attempt to reach man not man’s attempt to reach God.
Who Is Christ?
Christ is:
• The Messiah (the Saviour) of the world
(John 4:25–26; John 20:31)
• The Son of God
(Matthew 16:16)
• The Way, the Truth, and the Life
(John 14:6)
Was Christ Born on December 25?
No. The Bible does not record the exact date of Jesus’ birth.
Many scholars suggest Jesus was likely born in the autumn, based on biblical and historical clues (such as shepherds being in the fields).
December 25 was later adopted as part of the Christianization of the Roman festival Dies Natalis Solis Invicti (“the birth of the unconquered sun”). Over time, the Church used this date to redirect cultural celebration toward Christ, the true Light of the world.
What Christmas Is Not
Christmas is not, at its core:
Jingle bells. Christmas trees. Santa Claus (Father Christmas). Food. Clothes. Hair. Relationships. Parties.
However, many of these elements became attached to Christmas over time and were later given symbolic meaning.
Common Christmas Symbols & Their Meaning
• Evergreen trees – Symbol of eternal life
• Candles / lights – Christ is the Light of the world
• Holly – Reminds us of the crown of thorns
• Red – Points to the blood and sacrifice of Christ
• Gifts – A reminder of the gifts presented by the Magi
• Bells – Announce good news; Christ is the Gospel
• Mistletoe – In later European tradition, it was under mistletoe that Old enmities and broken friendships were restored. So Christ, took away enmity and gave us peace with God.
Should I Celebrate Christmas?
Christmas is not compulsory. Choosing not to celebrate it does not affect your fellowship with God.
But if you do celebrate, do so with understanding and intention.
Why celebrate it at all?
In my opinion, Christmas should be lived every day. Christ is the best thing that ever happened to the world, and His coming is always worth remembering.
How Should I Celebrate Christmas?
Christmas is a season of giving, because God first gave His Son for the reconciliation of humanity. It is not an excuse to return to the very things He saved us from. Christmas is not a license to sin.
Fix your gaze on Jesus, not on fleeting pleasures or empty indulgence. Remember Easter, and the price He paid for the life you now live. Show compassion to those in need. Share the good news. Serve, worship, and follow Christ wholeheartedly.
Christmas is not about you. It is not self-centered. And just as He came over two thousand years ago, He is coming again, this time in full glory.
