The Italianish word u can find only in Italy!

Today I will talk about some particular words that I recently discover are used only in Italy and aren’t in Italian but in English, strange right??

I’m always a little bit envious of people who are eng mother tongue, because they can go everywhere in the world knowing that at 98% they will find someone who talks the same language.

English is the most useful language in fact also the safety instructions on each transport are of course always in this language, about this part I have a question only for mother tongue, when u are on a flight have u ever understood what the pilot saying?

Because for me it’s impossible to hear, they give important information with a tiny tiny stereo and talking so softly that’s is impossible understand what they say, or other time the pilot swallow the words.

They could saying: “And the winner of a first class ticket for any place in the world for all her life is….Laura” and I would stay on my seat thinking to which will be the first thing I will eat at my arrival.

Once I had a customer in the store where I work who talked exactly like a pilot, for my brain was a strange moment I felt like if he transported me on a flight and I was so surprised I haven’t ask him what’s is job, even if for me was at 100% a pilot.

In Italy we start studying English at the elementary school from 6yrs to 10-11 since the superiori (high school) so until the 18-19yrs.

I always had really bad teachers, at the elementary I had a mother tongue teacher (this is normally a good thing) who never know how to teach English to kids, in fact until the 10 I thought saying: “I am a pencil” was correct.. I mean really?? No one in that school never thought there was a problem?

Luckily the teacher after the elementary was pretty good, so I reached at least an extremely elementary level.

Instead at the high school I had a mix of teachers that could be perfect like characters for a tv series they were:

The Heartbroker, there was in a love triangle and during the first yr we felt like in a telenovela but she was really good unluckily she had to go in another school after the first yr, u can imagine why.

In Italy we are extremely stupid normally only the women lost the job or have to change city or receive a sanction.

The men receive an high five and a promotion.

The chatty, she was at her first experience, a lot of time she spent the lesson talking with some of the students about his/her life for who she/he have a crush etc. It would have been helpful as an exercise if she had told us to talk in eng, instead was always in Italian.

The Biased, we discovered only time after she had a relationship with the father of a student in our classroom, that gave sense to all the yrs where she had every chance possible she obviously won all the stage outside Italy one of those was organised in Miami 🤯. I had an interview for this but was a fake interview the teacher talked me all the time in Italian telling me my level wasn’t high enough, I remember that I’ve told her that I would be agree with her if she would spending time with me making a real interview.

The result was my mum had to pay for private lessons so I could understand something (I also had problem at school with dyslexia and I think I have ADHC or I’m simply hyperactive), plus I had to demonstrate to the “Biased” how good I could be even without her help.

During this period I had an holiday study in Ireland at 16yrs 😍😍😍 IRELAND U HAVE MY HEART AND SOUL!

Just to be clear to go to this holiday study one of my friends who was in another school had to ask to her teacher and at the school president to add a student from another school, and they said YES!

Thanks to that holiday I understood how important was eng. and how I loved communicating with people from all over the world (it’s still my fav thing).

I remember the first beer* I drank in Ireland talking with one of the teachers/guide who showed us Ireland, how we talked about beers and what we appreciated of the holiday and the student house, and yes there was also my first Irish coffee.

Even with all my study at the end of the school my level of eng was only a little bit higher of the elementary, luckily my first job was working as jolly in an hotel, being a jolly means u have to do EVERYTHING they ask: receptionist, bartender and waitress.

Everyday I talked in English, Germany, I tried to learn some words in Polish because one of the waiters was from Poland and she loved teaching me new words.

I talked also with a Spanish tour operator they always talked in Spanish and I always answered in Italian, in some way we understood how to communicate, I’m sure about it only because after the call I always received their reservations... ok, ok sometimes I was surprised by it and other I thought: “oh really they wanted 2 double rooms?”.

U know what I noticed of people is that no matter where we are from, even if we don’t talk the same language we always find a way to communicate, when I was in China in 2019 a lot of people didn’t speak Eng but the communication wasn’t a problem.

Sometimes I had to draw what I wanted, other I really have no idea how we understand each other.

The same happened in France last yr I found this lovely family and no one of them talked eng or other languages

During those yrs I decided to practice more my eng I started writing recipes on the blog section of Jamie Oliver (best decision ever), luckily I also have a passion for tv series so I started looking the same ep. for three times: one in original language and Italian sub., the second with eng sub to understand the words and the third only looking the ep trying to repeat the words.

This small things helped me a lot to learn better eng, until FINALLY I could talk without problems with everyone.

I LOVE asking people where they are from, sometimes inside the store I had some really good conversations like once I talked with a girl from NY about David Letterman, Jimmy Fallon and Ellen DeGeneres and others.

Now I also took part in zoom conversations with people from all over the world, internet it’s a great instrument if u use it correctly.

Ok about the zoom conversations sometimes I laugh even when I don’t understand the joke 😅😅 only because other people are laughing, that’s makes me feel a little bit stupid, but I’m pretty confident that one day I really will talk like a perfect Brit.

There are two things that aren’t still clear to me, how u know someone love u like friend or if he/she have a love interest in u? Because in eng u simply use to say I love u to friends, fam, husband, wife etc.

In Italy we say “Ti amo” this means “I’m in love of u” and we use to say “ti voglio bene” if we are friend, two different words to say how we love someone it’s more practical.

The second thing instead is why in Italy we created words who aren’t eng but are in eng?

We practically created a sort of englitalian or italianish or Britalian.

I discovered it only few months ago in the strangest way possible, there is a lego set called “tuxedo cat” and thanks this I understood what it means tuxedo, in Italy we call it “smoking”.

It was like if something in my brain was unlocked I started thinking: “how many words I use in Italy that aren’t English?”, and I started my research this are some words u will hear only in Italy:

I start with my favorite

Rest station

In Italy are called Autogrill that it’s also the name of the brand who own all the Autogrill, u can find it only along the highway.

For me are a magical place because inside u find things u nomally don’t see on sale in shops like here u can find an ham covered of pepper I saw it since I was a kid only inside the Autogrill, but they are so freaking expensive I rarely buy something, rarely u can find some really good offer.

In other u find some local products of the zone or they are rebranded, like recenty I went to the Bauli Autogrill that is AMAZING.

What make me laugh a lot I when I listen interview of VIP saying: “the sandwich inside the gas station in Italy are better than any kind of sandwich u can find in New York”, I never went in NY but how their sandwich could be so bad? Maybe I take the wrong decisions in my life, I should have opened a cafe in NYC where I would have served only excellent sandwiches and toasts, now I will be rich for sure.

Italian people rarely eat sandwich in Autogrill because are FREAKING EXPENSIVE and the quality isn’t high, the breakfast normally is good but other time the espresso is so bad that taste like the water u use for clean the dish.

Bus or coach

I don’t know why we call it Pullman, in Bologna we use to call it tram because in the past we had it, now the mayor is destroying all the city to add again the tram without asking to no one the permission..

Garage

In Italy we use to call the garage also box, that of course in eng have a different meaning 📦🗃️

We use to say pile, now I understand why the sales assistants outside Italy never understood what I said.

Hitchhiking

We call it autostop, practically we fused two words the Auto and Stop, that for me have a lot of sense.

Smartworking in Italy and I was 100% sure this was eng, only searching a new job I understood that also smartworking is a word created by Italian.

Trolley yes we call it like u call the cart and u have no idea how many time at the airport I said: “yes I have only one trolley”, they must have thought I was the classic ignorant tourist.

Tape

Scotch, once I said to a customer: “don’t worry now I fix it with the scotch” they must have thought I was an alcoholic 😅

Vanity case or makeup bag

Beautycase in britalian also isn’t so bad right?

Jogging or running

In Italy we say footing to describe a fast walking and we say jogging if u run.

U have no idea how many times I thought all those were English words, now I understand why a lot of times people didn’t understood what I said.

I think in Italy we create this parallel vocabulary because believe it or not but at the end of the medieval period there were a lot of Brit in Italy 🤯🤯.

So for sure the people of that period who certainly did not speak English interpreted but changed some words. U know that thank to brit sailors we discovered what was the RUM, and we dedicated a recipe to them the Zuppa Inglese that looks more or less like an english trifle.

I don’t know why even now we modify english words or use it to substitute italian words like now instead of saying: “è un pò troppo” we say “è un pò too much” and gen z use to say: “è così cringe” or “davvero cringissimo” practically an italianizzation of and other language why we do it? Honestly I have zero idea but it always made me smile.

*yes u have to be 21yrs to drink in Ireland, UK and US but I always looked like an adult even at 16, no one asked me to see my ID 🪪.

Fun fact after 21 people started asking me the ID, once happened in US but maybe the waiter asked me it only because she wanted only a big tip. I never felt so cool before, drinking the beer directly from the bottle after I showed her my passport.
