just some direction

Howdy readers and welcome to 2026!

Today’s piece is about the dreadful new year resolutions.

January has a very specific energy.

Reset energy. Fix-yourself energy. “This is the year I finally become a better person” energy.

It sounds hopeful. But it’s also quietly aggressive & unkind.

Because hidden inside most New Year’s resolutions is the idea that who you are right now isn’t enough. That you need a replacement version of yourself — calmer, more disciplined, more confident — and preferably by February.

I don’t think you need a new you.

I think you need a clearer direction.

We’re so used to thinking in outcomes:

lose weight

be less anxious

be more productive

be happier

But outcomes are slippery. They depend on mood, circumstances, sleep, hormones, other people, and life generally doing what life does.

ACT works a bit differently. Instead of asking “What do I want to get rid of this year?” it asks:

“How do I want to show up?”

That question doesn’t require you to be fixed.

It just requires honesty.

Direction is not a goal.

You don’t “achieve” it and move on.

Direction is something you keep choosing — even on days when you feel unmotivated, tired, or doubtful.

You can move in a meaningful direction while still feeling anxious.

You can live according to your values while being messy, imperfect, and unsure.

That counts.

So instead of rewriting yourself this January, try this:

Ask:

  • What matters enough to guide my choices this year?

  • What kind of person do I want to practice being — not perfectly, just more often?

And then look for small, ordinary ways to move in that direction.

No dramatic transformation required.

No new personality needed.

Just the same you — paying a bit more attention to what matters.

If this year needs anything from you, it’s not reinvention.

It’s orientation.

And that’s something you can come back to anytime.
